Title: Portable AC and Generator
Post by: east lake hunter on Jul 02, 2008, 07:57 PM
I have purchased a Amcor ALP12000E Portable AC. According to the owners manual it uses 950 watts, but I don't know the start up watts.  Does anyone out there use a generator with a portable ac unit?   Is so, what's the surge wattage of your generator.

Amcor's technical people tell me a generator will not work with the unit.   But the guy I spoke with didn't really sound like he knew what he was talking about.

If you use a 2000w generator, you should have no problem.

The surge wattage is usually about x 1.5 when the compressor is cycling, hot.

I have a Honda EU2000i and it barely handles my roof AC. Mine is a Carrier AirV Heat Pump. It draws 1357w running and 1750w start-up (I think it's closer to 1900w cycling, hot).

The problem is, a typical rating on most generators is the surge rating. The running rating is usually between 75-80% of the published rating.
