Title: Where to buy a 1/4" ring pin
Post by: Hackker on Sep 26, 2008, 08:11 AM
On a recent trip, I left my coupler pin on the rear bumper and it went bye-bye.  So, I swung by a Menards in the area and bought one with the wrap around wire that locks it into place.  The one I bought looks like this:

But I wanted to get one like my original one, which looked like this:

I need one that is 1/4" x around 2.5" long.  Tried Home Depot, Lowes, Mendards, WalMart, and ACE Hardware and nobody sells this.  Anyone know of another place to try?

Try A boat/Marine store. they should have those, but you might have to special order the size you want.
Good luck

Our TrailManor came with the type pin that you bought as a replacement. I like it because you don't have 2 separate parts to be concerned about. It's easy to use too.

Does anyone use something like this for securing their coupler?

Any problems with safety?  Only thing I could see is if it somehow got whacked on the side it could potentially push the pin out.

OOOOPS!!! Time out......When you say "Coupler", what exactly are you talking about??

I use that type pin for the front wheel "Coupler" on my trailer tongue (the wheel is detachable). If you are talking about your trailer hitch coupler....that's an entirely different issue.

Hackker,

What you bought for your hitch coupler is a lock hitch pin. What you are looking for is a ring pin. Wavery makes it sound complicated...You can find these at a Tractor Supply Co. or any farm outlet that handles tractor parts and three point equipment hitches....

I've found them at Home Depot, Lowes, my True Value store as well as Ace Hardware stores.  You can also find them at farm supply dealers, trailer dealerships as well as rv dealerships.

For this and almost any hardware item, plumbing part, motor, whatever hard to find item you need, go to www.mcmastercarr.com (//%22http://www.mcmastercarr.com%22) They are the maintenance manager's best friend.

I would think the lock hitch pin you bought would do fine.  Used one exactly like it myself.  Worked fine.

Farm & Fleet, Mills Fleet Farm, Tractor Supply - look for places that cater to utility trailers or farm trailers.

Thanks for all the input, ended up just sticking with the pin I bought.  But I learned that pretty much nobody around me sells 1/4" ring pins!   :D
