Post by: BadAss88GT on Oct 05, 2008, 09:46 PM
I'm looking for a recommendation for a free standing propane grill. We had a table top $20 Wal Mart special but theyre junk and want to get something nice. Whatcha using? Thanks-Dan

Have to agree, But its not free standing, you need to purchase the stand seperatly like I did ,but what a wonderful lil Q. I got the rolling bag and the hose for a standard propane tank....It's the best ... :#

Another vote for a Weber Q.  Definitely worth the $$.  We didn't buy a stand for it - we just set it on the end of the picnic table or the ground when grilling.

If you don't want to spend up for the Weber Q, then definately grab the Weber Go-Anywhere Gas.  $54ish at your local Home DeepHole and they take up very little space.  They use the green $3 propane tanks, you can plumb your big onboard tank to take umpteen feet of flex hose and use your grill that way.

Porcelain coated steel, so they don't burn their paint off and start rusting after the first season, and are easy to keep very clean.  They also use the porcelain flavorizor bar system like Weber's full-size home grills, so you don't get grease flair ups.

They're a lot of bang for the buck.

I consider the Q free standing until you put it on a stand. Then it is no longer free standing. Maybe I'm confused as to what free standing means. Maybe not!

1: standing alone or on its own foundation free of support or attachment
2: independent 1 ; especially : not being part of or affiliated with another organization

And, I thought of "free standing" as meaning not an RVQ type grill which is used attached to an RV.

My vote remains a Weber!

For use in a large ClassA RV with plenty of storage room in the basement, or even most TTs and Hybrids the Weber Q makes perfect sense.

However, for a PopUp, the Baby or 100 series Weber Q is simply HUGE!!

Especially if you attempt to purchase the wheeled stand.  It will take up most of the front trunk of most PopUps all by itself.  Or, your center isle inside your PopUp if you don't have a slide out will go mostly to storing the Weber Q.

There are smaller propane alternatives.  Weber's forgotton stepchild of portable propane grills, The Weber Go Anywhere Propane Grill, is very good but has a small capacity, it's good when cooking for four or less people.

Another small yet very capable propane grill is the Stainless Steel Holland Companion Grill (http://www.hollandgrill.com/index.cfm/fuseaction/products.detail/prodID/2/index.htm) .

We just purchased the Weber Go-Anywhere grille. As stated, it takes up about 1/2 the storage place of the Weber-Q and it's 1/2 the price.

We haven't used it yet but I put it together and stowed it. It seems decent and I'm sure it will cook our steaks as well as any other grille. The basic shell is porcelain coated steel but the grille itself is chrome. I was a bit disappointed in that but I guess you get what you pay for.

We have an 8' extension hose for our propane tank and will use that apposed to the 1# cans. We also bring an additional propane tank that we use for our Mr Buddy heater. We will use that so we can locate the BBQ away from the trailer.

In the two seasons with this camper and the 7 or 8 with the old camper we never needed a store bought BBQ grill. We cook a lot over the campfire though, with a tri pod grill, dutch oven, and sometimes just aluminum foil wrapped items. We've done countless steaks, ribs, chickens, dogs, burgers, roasts, even fish, shrimp, along with tators, egg plant, stuffed shrooms, pop corn, asparagus, yep even pizza. And if you seen me you would know we had not gone hungry. Camping without a fire is just not the same. I would guess we have a campfire 95% of the time in the evening, and use it for cooking 85% of the time as well.......Shredder

Don't be to sure about that skippy.  I can name more than a few people from the desert group that go rid of their "Go Anywhere" type grills and bought a Weber Q and love it.  Although, I have found over the years that Weber is just a good brand period.  I wouldn't trade our Q 200 for anything.

I've had the Weber 'Go-Anywhere' grill for many years but have always been looking for something a bit bigger.  :compumad:

After lot's of research, I was about to pull the trigger on the new Weber Q when I was surprised by my DW at Christmas. She got me a Coleman Road Trip-Pro. It looks great, folds pretty flat, and has a lot of cooking space. However, I'm very dissapointed as it flares up constantly and broke on our second trip with it. (The spot welded anchor that secures it in the 'UP' position broke off).

Although I can't recommend a grill to buy, I would say to stear clear of this one.

On a side note, I did purchase
Camp-Chef Explorer - 2 burner stove and that thing is awesome!  :-()  I paid $99 for it at Sportsmans Warehouse.

Not being a BBQ expert, I had to learn the hard way about grill design vs. flare ups.  Now I'll probably never own anything other than a Weber for gas cooking (and my Char-Broil 940(http://img.epinions.com/images/opti/fc/e4/pr-Char-Broil_940-resized200.jpg)) for charcoal.  Although if I had the money, I'd own a "Big Green Egg."

My inlaws just bought a big fancy stainless BBQ from Costco for $400.  I warned them about flareups non-Webers.  Cooking on that thing is like cooking over a bucket of gasoline.  What a joke!

I have the Weber 100 (or Baby Q) and while it's not small, it definitely is not a problem to store in my pop-up.  I have a 10 ft box with storage trunk and no slide.  The Weber easily fits in the aisle inside, along with a bunch of other stuff.  Enough that we have decided that the next time we pop it up, we are sorting through everything that is in there and removing what we aren't using.  I guess it all comes down to what you have space for.  Good luck in your search.

Cadac Safari Grill. Absolutely the best! Compact, versatile. Love it!

Love my Webers. Q's great for popup, stores up front. But to be honest we use the side dual burner as much if not more than the grill. Really surprised me.

Once you cook on a Weber, you can never go back. Great product, incredible support. Had an old Genesis that I finally retired after 14 years. The only issue it ever had were the catch pan supports. Called tech support a couple of years ago and they sent them out in 2 days and oh yeah, for FREE !

Sooner or later you'll own a Weber, cause nothing else is the same. Costs more up front, but lasts longer and cooks better.

I own a Q100 for camping and a Q220 for home both are great grills
Title: I'm Gonna Buck the Trend
Post by: Hoagie on Oct 14, 2008, 02:24 PM
I'm going to buck the trend here.....

I've had Weber home grills in the past and as stated by many they are great. Never owned one of the "Q" series so can't speak to them.

I'm going to second the recommendation about staying away from the Coleman RT series. Had one for 2 trips and got rid of it. I didn't think they were all that well made and the BTUs they put out was insufficient.

This brings up a good point:  how do you BBQ? If you are only looking to grill hot dogs, burgers and the occasional steak, and you don't mind the cooking taking a bit longer, go with one of the Webers. You really can't go wrong with them.

If, however, you are also in the market for an outside stove, I can highly recommend the Camp Chef Pro-60. 30,000 BTUs from each burner gets a pot of water boiling in no time. We purchased the accessory griddle and BBQ/Oven box and now do 99% or our cooking on this stove. The griddle is cast iron and gets nice and hot for pancakes, quesadillas, paninis, etc. The BBQ accessory has a nice lid so you can grill, roast and bake in it. There is only one down side to this grill -- it's heavier than any of the common portables. But I have the wheeled storage bag on the wish list.
