Title: Doh!!!-Too tall
Post by: Bluedog225 on Jan 11, 2009, 07:37 PM
Obviously, I'm a complete newbie at this.  First trailer.  1974 Coleman Brandywine (my gf thinks it sounds like an exotic dancer, wants me to change the name, that's another thread).  Checked the frame, the floor, dry weight,, tongue weight, the title, knew what had to be fixed and what didn't, etc.

I've been working on it for about a week now and oops, the bunks are exactly 6 feet long.  As am I.   Grrrr....the manual said it was 6 foot 2 in width (which it is, just not the bunks).

I have not ordered the new canvas yet.  Only about $500 into the project.  I can still bail out.  Are other popups wider than 6 feet?

I'd like to stick with it.  Is there an accepted way of fixing this?  Lengthen the short side of the bunk from 4 feet to 6 foot 6 inches?  I don't think having my head and feet against the canvas it going to work.

Thoughts?

Tom

My first thought would be to build a bed extension out of wood and then top it off with a foam strip to match the thickness of your original foam pad. This way you can sleep in the length direction, instead of the width direction. Make the extension portable so you can break it down when not needed.
shouldn't be hard to do.

Good Luck  ;)

Our front bunk is about the same as yours.  When no one uses the dinette for sleeping, which is never cause it is just the two of us, I stack the seat back cushion on top of the seat cushion bottom next to the bed.  We sleep long ways, with our heads toward the interior of the camper, and I use the stacked cushions for my pillow area.  They are just the right height for a bed extension.

We have a 93 Coleman Destiny if that helps.

We sleep with our heads at the end of the trailer so we don't have to climb over each other to get out of bed.

My Old StarCraft has the same size bunks and I'm 6'3". I sleep diagnolly for room, while my wife uses the other bunk and son uses the converted table to bed next to me. Sleeping this way gives me plenty of room, just too far from my spouse though.
