Title: modifying the bed
Post by: Sitting Bull on Jan 17, 2009, 06:01 PM
Hey gang,

We purchased our pop-up two years ago (96 Viking, the small one), when our kids were much smaller (2 and 4).  Originally, I would sleep in one side with my son, and my wife would sleep in the other with my daughter.  However, now that they are 6 and 4, they are confident enough to sleep on their own side.

So, that puts Jolie and I together, and the bed is kind of tight - I'm 6'-2, 250.  She's small, but I have to sleep diagonally to stretch my legs out.  What I'm wondering is if anyone has made a bed extension so we could sleep parallel to the length of the pop-up, instead of perpendicular.

It would have to be removable so it would not interfere with the folding up process and not taking up all the space during the day.  Surely I'm not the first one to run into this problem.  I'm pretty good with my mig welder, and I've built more complicated stuff than this from scratch...but...I'm always looking to see if someone has gone through the pain before and has some advice.

Unfortunately, a bigger pop-up wouldn't work.  I tow it with my Jeep, and we are going up some pretty rough forrest service roads in the GA mountains.  Stream crossings, switchbacks, etc.  I really, really abuse the suspension system of it, and I am quite suprised it's lasted this long.  I'm sure some frame/suspension reinf. is in my future as well.  I would tear the crap out of one of the big units.

Thanks!!!
Brad

Here's a link to pictures of one that I plan on copying for my Sun Vally for the same reasons.
