Planning a trip to dc March 29-April 3 with wife and daughters 11 and 14. We are wanting to see all the sites and are trying to decide on taking the pop up camper and possibly staying at Pohick Bay, or staying in a motel. We enjoy camping but being from FL this would be a very long trip to a unfamiliar place to us, and we are not going to camp as usual but would like to save a little money by camping if we could find a convient place to stay while in the area. Any advice from those familar with the area would be appreciated. Also have heard of Cherry Hill Campground but with mixed reviews. Would not be against a motel if anyone could offer affordable-safe-convient suggestions.
Thank you,
Kirk

Kirk,
I don't have any advise for you, but I just wanted to say welcome aboard, I see this is your first post. I'm sure someone here will have some advise for you.

We stayed 5 nights in Pohick Bay last summer. The Franconia/Springfield subway station is 5 to 10 miles away and is a great way hit downtown DC and miss all the traffic. My kids aged 10 & 12 loved doing the metro thing every day. My only regret was with all the DC tourist things we wanted to do, we really did not get to spend many waking hours at the Pohick Bay camprgound - one of the nicest of our cross country trip.
If you camp there I hope your stay is as nice as ours was. BTW - Mt Vernon is just a short drive up Route 1. Good luck
Thanks for the reply. Especially glad to hear your kids enjoyed the park - that makes me feel better. Approximately how long did it take you to reach the downtown attractions from the campground? Any particular sites in the campground that you would recommend? Thanks again.
