Title: my pup is nekkid ~ can I say that here? ;)
Post by: Kelly on Apr 14, 2009, 10:11 PM
It took me and a friend about an hour to remove all the canvas ... and the curtains and valance.  Managed to fit all the canvas into a box that measured 16"x16"x23" ... and then shipped it off to Bear Creek.   While the canvas is being done, we'll spend some time washing all the curtains and caulking the seams on the roof.  We'll reinstall the curtains and valance after the canvas is done.  Hopefully we'll have the replacement done and installed by the end of June when we have our first outing.

It's going to be a slow camping season for us ~ but we're excited for Hershey to get new "clothes"  :p

It looks sorta cute nekkid.  I saw a picture somewhere of Hershey buried in snow not too long ago.  It looks like Spring is almost there.

Here in Minnesota, a pup without canvas would be uninhabitable.  The 'skeeters (unofficial state bird, BTW) will carry you off.

People in ... Minnesota ... declare the mosquito to be the unofficial state bird.

You can still camp without the canvas...I can picture the look on everyone's face when you crank it up :J

Hope Hershey gets her new outfit soon, camping season is starting :sombraro:

One of Georgia's native sons (and one of my favorite authors),  the late Lewis Grizzard, wrote about "naked vs. nekkid".  He said that "naked" means you don't have any clothes on, and "nekkid" means you don't have any clothes on and you're up to no good!!! :p

LOL Kelly!  I can just picture you and the kids showing up at a campground, cranking up, setting up camp, and then camping in your nekkid PU.  I could just see the looks people would give you as they went by.  You could even tell them that you have see though tenting so that you can watch the stars at night.:D

Any if I may be so forward, what type of material are you going to have the new clothing made out of?

a hot dog stand??  you mean I could be making money while I wait?  who knew? ;)

I ordered new "clothing" out of the finest canvas that Bear Creek had to offer ... we went with the gray.  And they make the windows tinted ~ yay!

They have a 10 to 12 week turn-around!  So the kids and I decided to camp a little less and I signed them up for most of the summer activities they wanted to do.  Next year it will be back to camping as usual.

I have a tent you can have -- I hate for you to not camp for a while.  :)  :p   Of course, there is that small problem of getting the tent to you.  How's this for a deal - if you come pick it up, I'll pay for your campsite!  There are limits to my generosity, however.  In the meantime, hope the kids have fun doing their non-camping stuff.  But, I hope Hershey is dressed as quickly as possible so you know who gets to camp on her birthday.

Thanks for the very generous offer, Jan  :p  Iowa is a little more in the middle ... maybe we should be planning something there.  ;)

You-know-who has already informed me that this year she will be camping in the backyard with some friends and they are sleeping in the tent this time. Could happen.  (I'll just leave the back door open just in case :D)

Just be sure and send us pictures after Hershey is fully clothed. I would like to see her new dudds. I am going to be replacing the canvas on my Jayco 1406 in the next year or so and I would really get a good idea of how it will turn out when I see your's with her clothes back on.  :sombraro:

My boy and I traveled to Bear Creek Canvas yesterday and had them install the new canvas.  They did an awesome job.  They were so easy to work with and watching them install the canvas was a great experience for both the boy and me.  The craftmanship on the new canvas is absolutely beautiful.  You can see more photos here  (//%22http://picasaweb.google.com/kaecf2/1995Jayco1207KB%22)

If you are thinking about replacing your canvas ~ I can't praise these guys enough.

We went to a private campground last year, and the campers down the road from us store their camper on their lot year round.  When they arrived at camp, they popped open their camper and it looked just like that..:yikes:  Someone had stolen all the canvas off of it, And took the time to fold it back down.. Talk about a ruined camping trip! BTW the new canvas looks GREAT!

oh ~ don't do that, Becky!  You'd be so proud to know what the guys at Bear Creek said about Hershey.  They were impressed with how good she looked and how well she had been taken care of ... and how far she'd traveled to get new clothes ;)  (they were surprised she'd come all the way from PA to MN)

Kelly,

Hershey looks better than I have ever seen her.  What is the new tenting made of.  I think she had Evolution 3 on her originally.  I like the new color.:)

Tracy ~

I think it was the Evolution 3 ... the guys at Bear Creek told me that it is a paper product made by Kimberly Clark and breaks down after years of exposure.  Sounds about right.  That part of the tenting was so bad, that I ran out of places to stitch patches to ~ the stuff would just disintegrate when you touched it.

The new stuff is great.  We had some really good rain the last time out and it was all good.  I wasn't up half the night worrying that the canvas was going to come down on our heads from the weight of the water.  We had that happen during a big storm in ND last year ~ my mom on one bunkend pushing water off and me on the other.  Not fun.

Here is the description of the new materials from Bear Creek's website  (//%22http://www.bearcreekcanvas.com/services.htm%22)...

The tops made at Bear Creek Canvas are manufactured out of 10.38-once canvas which meets or exceeds industry standards. Whenever possible we use materials made in the U.S.A. Our windows are made of tinted 12-mil. vinyl to help keep out excess sunlight and heat. The screen on the windows is a tight 18x16-mesh assisting you in keeping out unwanted insects. A durable 13-once vinyl material over the bed wing that assists you in making sure your camping trip is dry and enjoyable.

Another plus ~ with the windows shut, it is like a cave inside.  The night that I ran the fan and had all the windows closed, my kids slept in!  They were much happier campers that day!  ;)
