Title: Garage parking PU - Steep driveway
Post by: wavery on May 07, 2009, 10:50 AM
A friend of mine from Ohio just wrote me and asked for help parking his PU in the garage. Seems the problem is, he had a new home built and didn't realize how steep the driveway was.

Does anyone have ideas for getting a PU up a really steep driveway????

I asked him to email pics.

How about a riding lawnmower    I have read how others are using them to move their PU's around  :U

I do use mine for that, but no way would it haul around my camper on much more than a slight incline.

1) Will the camper make the transition between the street and the driveway without tearing off the rear bumper?
2) What he got for a tow vehicle?
3) Does the driveway level off somewhat prior to the garage?

A set of either fixed or swivel castors will keep the rear bumper from being torn off.  I put a set of fixed mount on mine, rated at 250lbs each and they work perfect.

If he's got a truck or SUV, he could but a receiver hitch on the front and then be able to push the camper up the driveway nicely without all the BS of trying to back it up the driveway.

He could install an electric winch in the garage and power winch the camper up.  Problem is, how would he get it back down again?  Maybe spin it 180* while in the garage and then grab it with the TV and drive away?  Or put wheel skates under it if room is limited and spin it that way.

I cant imagine the incline being less than a 6 or 8 to 1 ratio (1 foot drop for every 6 feet of length)

if he has a few helpng hands they should be able to get it up the drive by pushing it

the other option is mouting a 3k winch or better to the back of the garage floor and using it to pull the camper up into the garage

you are joking, right ?!
(inserts foot in mouth)
that is easily a 4-1 pitch and very odd to see for short driveways! (under 50 feet anyway)

I am out of ideas for your friend....  I see nothing but damaging the camper happening, because at least some parts are going to drag somewhere...

how do they expect to drive into that with a car?

Sometimes....I just can't help myself. Someone sent me that picture and the only thing that I could think of was, "How the heck is he gonna get his PU in there?"   :p

Heck....that's not a driveway.......that's a wall.....

That driveway wouldn't meet most city code regulations, possibly county. Those houses/driveways, if real, must be in a faraway place without too many rules to begin with.

That said, if someone truly needed help with this, I like the winch idea the best.

Todd,
You should join us some time and meet Wayne in person.  He is way cool.  I finally got to meet him and his lovely wife at Doheny.

I'd like to me all you guys!  Missed my chance when you all came up and camped at Morro Bay 2 February's ago.

Of course this whole driveway thing changes things a bit.  Now I'll bring a box of ganola and when he's not paying attention........pour that into his bed.

You should turn this thread into a poll.

I'd vote for the winch.

I'd also vote for the fork-lift.

I vote wavery in as the forum's best comic. Thanks, man, for the chuckles this fine spring morning.

Ouch! Walking to the car on that must be fun on ice days! 'Honey, why are you laying in the street?'

I bet the skateboarders love it there though!
