Title: Arvee Club Moved to new server
Post by: dno on May 21, 2009, 09:40 AM
I am in the process of moving Arveeclub.com to a new server, at the same time I'm upgrading to the most recent version of the forum software so things will look a little bit different but hopefully mostly the same.

Since it takes some time for the domain name to propagate I have also put the forum software on popuptims.com so I can shift traffic away from the old server while the arvee club domain name is in the propagation process. Hopefully this process won't take more than 24 hours.

There are some template issues I still need to deal with and I will try to get those issues resolved as soon as possible.

I'm afraid due to the time it takes to download all the data, convert it and reupload it we have lost many of the posts over the past 24 hours... not to mention my internet service was disrupted from about 3:30-8:15 while I was in the process of uploading files to the popuptimes.com server.

I noticed that the polls no longer tell you who voted for which choice.  you used to get a list.

Also the font color option doesn't have a drop down, and when you click it defaults to black.

Are these things that will come back in time??

I've noticed a few problems myself. I hope I can get everything back to working the way it should. I'm going through the new administrative features trying to figure out how the new stuff is setup and where to make what change to get things back to working correctly.

Sorry dkutz, It looked like your post was posted twice and I tried to remove one and it took both out, but yes it does look like a fun memorial day weekend. :-)

its cool, just so you don't think your crazy.  I did post twice, and I deleted one, leaving one for you to delete.  No big deal...

Too funny, I didn't notice that the first one was deleted by you. Thanks I feel better now :-()

I've been browsing around yesterday and today and was able to change (add) a generic avatar to my signature.  My only question now is; is the new server totally up yet, or is it going to be another day or so before the kinks are worked out?  I know how switching to new versions of the same software can be challenging  :compumad: and time consuming.  I am assuming (I know, gotta be careful on that one!!!) that administrator will let us know when everything is running on all cylinders.  So far, I like what I see.  Good job!!  :!

It's difficult to say how long everything will take to get fully resolved as I'm not super familiar with the software so at the same time I'm trying to get up to speed myself.

Starting from the version we had before, it took severl steps for the conversion, perhaps as many as 100 and as few as 50 there were alot, I didn't bother counting. I did noticet the biggest change seemed to be at version 3.6. I'm sure as we go we will get it all figured out.

I am hoping that you made a backup of the posts before you made this transitions. My first post in the Smithwoods RV Rally post under the SCCampers Club Forum which includes the list of all reservations is missing 90% of the original post. When you get it back I will make a copy, but help. I needed to make some updates and I can't.

Is there a backup of that first post that you can send me?

Well it looks like I have good data on my local server so there must have been some corruption on the upload to the live server. I did copy and past your content from my local server to your thread... see if it looks good to you now.

Too bad about this change and all the problems it's caused.  I wish you could have left it alone and good luck restoring all the lost threads.  What a shame.

If you'd like to read about another of these vbulletin disasters, google "Audi World" and their recent switch to the vB style forums.  We, the users, left.......to the tune of 3,000 members in about 72hrs and those ranks have grown to almost 5,000 members.......recreated our old forums, took our huge FAQ's with us, and haven't looked back since.

I'm not suggesting that's going to happen here, but man, this is sort of destroyed right now.....and if it's not working, I can certainly see people moving to another forum.

Well I guess that is another good question before we get too far down the road with this version of VB. How do you guys like this VB software. I will admit that I'm not impressed with it and I've tried several. I find this software very complicated and tedius to manage. That is not to say there are no redemming features, but for me the bad outweighs the good... so far.

Unfortunately leaving it as it was did not seem to be an option. I needed to move the site and it did not appear I was going to be granted access to the forum files. For me the ideal solution would be to download the existing files and upload them somewhere else, set the configuration and away we go. I've done this kind of thing several times with no real issues, but this time was a bit of a challenge since all I could get was the data itself.

I hated to loose a days worth of posts but it is what it is I've got quite a bit of work ahead just trying to figure out where all the problems are and if those problems can be fixed.

I've never been a big vB fan because I don't like that you have to go through an entire thread in order to see if there's been a new post.

That's why all of us left Audi World.  We had been using Kawf since the site was start.  Kawf was/is fantastic, and it allowed the forum to run like a group fo friend were having a chat.  When that was taken away (and we had to start slogging through forums and topic areas and then threads in order to find out if someone had responded to something we were interested in) we said good-bye, en mass.

My suggestion would be to return this forum to it's original condition, and then figure out a way to move the whole thing onto a new server if that's what has to happen.  The worst thing you can do is loose the knowledge base that's been established in the huge archives (this was another mistake Audi World made) because it's that access to knowledge that keeps these technical based sites alive.  People come here for the knowledge base, find friendship in commonalities, and wind up staying.  Loose the knowledge base, or ease of use, and the site can suffer a huge loss of membership.

If, like in the case of Audi World, which had been sold a year before to Internet Brands to the tune of 6 figures, the site generates income for the owners, based on ad revenue, it can be a huge financial hit to change the site.  In the case of Audi World, guess where the ad revenue went?  They all followed us over to the new website, //www.quattroworld.com  Huge financial hit for Internet Brands......but we had warned them long before the switch that we would not accept a change in the forum format or a shift to vB.

Can't say I'm familiar with kawf but I've run sites using phpbb, smf and snitz, and one other that I can't remember the name of at the moment, all of which I like better than vb and they are all free vs vb's license fee system. Out of those I would lean toward SMF due to it's exetensive community of supporters and ease of modifying and updates.

I was thinking at first I was going to move over to SMF but SMF's converter required that VB be installed. If we had to get VB then I may as well go ahead and use it and not make this move a dramatic change.

Where we are at now is going back to the previous version is not an option since it was a beta of version 3, I can't get the files for that version from the old server either. The earliest version I can get is version 3.0 which I could not get working on my local machine which then would not give me the ability to work off-line. I could use this current version so that is what I moved to.

If anyone else feels strongly that VB is not a great package, please chime in. In fact I will make a new thread were we can discuss it.
Title: my status is now changed to "guest"
Post by: Tiffany on May 23, 2009, 08:40 PM
I've noticed that my status on the stuff I've posted is now reading "guest".  I went back to the User CP and re-entered my profile info, so we'll see what my status looks like when this gets posted.  (I was happy to see that I could use an avatar now!)  Has anyone else's status changed to "guest"?  It's not a problem, I know that kinks and stuff is bound to happen when you're changing servers ;)
Title: didn't work; still a guest
Post by: Tiffany on May 23, 2009, 08:42 PM
Nope, it didn't work; I'm still a guest.  I'll wait a day or two and try again.
Title:
Post by: dno on May 23, 2009, 10:33 PM
I was comparing registrations that seem fine against registrations that show up as guest. I can't find anything wrong, a side by side comparison is not indicating what the problem may be so I'm thinking it's not the registration file itself. My current theory is there is something in the way you guys were logged in or a session cookie or something.

The one thing I would like to see is my PM Status. it used to be in the center section with the Welcome Dee4j...now unles I remember to go thru the user CP pull down menu I don't know if I have any New PM's and I also can't see how many are stored and if I'm almost full...

I really would like this feature back if possible

I'm working on a new template that should restore the PM status. I've determined there must be some kind of corrupion in the current template so I'm starting from scratch and building a new one.

Coach, I'm not sure what is causing your problem, but it seems to be affected several people. Looking directly at records like yours I can't see where your record is any different from the working records so now I will expand my search to other tables, there has to be something that is different than the working users. I did notice from the admin side that when I find you in the user list your user id does not show up along with others that have the same problem. My next guess is perhaps there is some kind of setting you guys have in common that I need to look for.

I changed the site template earilier which seemed to fix several problems but not the one you are having... I am working to solve that problem though.

Been gone for a week (camping) and was greeted with the change today when I signed on.  When I clicked on New Posts and read about 5 of the threads, I stopped to post one reply.  Although the reply posted,  I got a database error.  Now the server thinks that I have viewed all the posts that I missed for a week.

The closet thing I found... on purpose, so far is "Mark This Forum Read" I'm not sure what it does exactly, but you can get to it from the forum level, currently if your reading this your at the thread level. From the Forum Level there is a title bar that is just uner the "New Thread" link that says "Threads in Forum : [thread name] follow that bar to the right and there are two links "Forum Tools" and "Sear this Forum", click the one that says "Forum Tools" and a drop down menu will popup, slect "Mark This Forum Read".

I'm not sure if this helps do what you want do or now.

Got it, you have to go to the main page, scroll to the bottom, and click mark forums read.  If you are looking at "new Posts" you have to click over to the main page to mark them all read.....

So heres my new issue... since PUT and PUX are now on the same server, if one is down they are BOTH down!  How will I get my PUP fix without either one??
Title:
Post by: dno on Jun 01, 2009, 01:02 AM
That is true, unfortuneately I can't afford to run too many different servers. I currently run two servers, one is mainly for my web design clients and PUX Trading Post, but it does not have near the capacity of the dedicated server that PUX and PUT is on. Putting Put on my server seems to have put me over the top as during peak times I'm getting alot of mysql server connection errors meaning there are not enough connections open.

Last week I upped the total connections to see if that helped and we were fine until today. Today was not as bad as last Sunday but I guess it's not fixed yet. I upped the total again today. We should know on monday if that helped. It's my understanding that there is a side-effect of opening too many connections and that has to do with memory, if I use up all the available ram then we go to the swap drive for more memory which will slow things down. My service provider tells me this is already happening so I may be forced to upgrade my server to one that is faster and has more ram. Of course this bigger better server costs more so I'm really hoping the first solution will work.

Ideally I would like to have the PUT stuff on a seperate server but that will have to wait until things settle down and we know where we end up financially.
Title:
Post by: dno on Jun 01, 2009, 10:53 PM
I guess I need to explore the new server, opening connections dose not seem to be getting us where we need to be.

One thing we did at QuattroWorld was to open up to donations via Paypal.  Doesn't take much from each person to help offset some of your operating costs.

Donating members were given a bit of code they could put in their signature lines which generated a cool little "Contributing Member" insignia.

Post by: dno on Jun 02, 2009, 10:34 AM
I've taken a few donations on PUX, it never really amounts to much, what really made the difference was when I opened PUX Trading Post, although sales have been way down this year, just like everyone else I guess.
