Title: California State Parks funding to be slashed
Post by: JimQPublic on May 28, 2009, 05:48 PM
The latest plan from the Terminator is to completely eliminate all general fund allocation for California State Parks.  As of 2006 the General Fund provided 29% ($100 million) of park funding.

Bad news if you value our public spaces.

Nor did I offer a solution, since I don't have one.

Maybe it's a good time for me to make an offer to buy Thornhill Broome at Pt Mugu.

That place is so poorly managed, it's not funny. It's not that it's not a nice place to go, quite the contrary. It is just under developed and under exploited.

That is great for us who like to camp in a beautiful nature spot CHEAP but the fact is, there is a much higher demand for CGs with hook-ups and maybe a few palm trees.

With a little investment (about $3M) that place could have 100 developed spaces (instead of the current 60 undeveloped) and bring in $50 per night (instead of $15).

I would say that the CG is about 20% occupied throughout the year. That would be an annual income of $82K. If that place could be 50% occupied @ $50 per night, that would be an annual income of $913K. Of course, the cost of maintaining the place would go up but the net take would increase by a minimum of $600K a year. That would return the $3M investment in about 5 years. That's not too shabby. After that, it would be pure gravy.

I could live off of $600K a year.......:sombraro:

Let me tell you.......if that place had shower, water, electric and some sort of community gathering place, it would be nearly full year round.

5 miles South of Pt Mugu is a private CG called Malibu Beach Resort. They get up to $115 per night (More on holidays) and it's on the other side of PCH and the campsites are tiny. All they offer, that Pt Mugu doesn't, is hook-ups and Pt Mugu offers so much more than Malibu Beach Resort that it isn't even funny.

Come on SCCAMPERS.......we should be able to scrape up $3M.....:-()

Having said all that..............if the State of California developed that place, the cost would be $3B........Now we're talking something different. It would have to be private development.

Wayne,

Don't forget about the great deal for the Far West resort at last years price tag of only $1mil. I could easily see a pool put in where the petting cage is and put a real office in and we would be set!

Ya but it would be real expensive to get the ocean and beach to come that far inland.....There's not enough $ in the world to get the view from Pt Mugu. Watching the Pelicans dive, Seals play and Dolphins jump is priceless.

Don't feel alone, Pennsylvania is doing some of this also.  We will have less parks to enjoy.  They haven't said yet which ones are to get the axe yet.:(

Politicians always claim they are going to eliminate the very things they are supposed to be providing to punish people for not giving them more money.
It's been going on for centuries.  No need to get excited.

If I am wrong, Buying some campgrounds cheep works for me, too.

They are supposed to be our employees and work for us!
Why can we not then just fire them in the next round of elections?
