Title: 110 plug in / converter
Post by: ltdave on Jun 04, 2009, 11:48 AM
Hi all,
I am hoping you can answer a question that I should probably already know.
We have a 1996 Coleman Santa Fe.  When I plug the camper into a 110 volt power there is a small hum under the seat by the table.  I'm assuming this is the converter.  Is this normal?  Is the converter suppose to make a small humming noise?  Lights worked, everything else seemed normal just want to know if the humming is normal.

Most likely to be normal.  My converter hums (it's really a small fan) also when the the converter is under a certain load, like too many lights on, or charging the battery when it's low.  When we only have a couple of lights on and the battery is fully charged, the fan doesn't run.  The book for mine says the fan is to cool the converter when under load.

Yes,the convertor is probably charging the battery. Some due also have cooling fans, but tend to only run under extreme usage,i.e.to many lights, weather, interior temperature...

Hope this helps............

The stack of thin plates that make up the transformer are loose for constant vibration, this is normal for alder transformer! Your transformer (converter) may be old enough and small enough to not have a thermostatically controlled fan, folks complain about it coming on and off all nigh long!

Yes, the hum is normal.

My converter's manual tells me to allow a few minutes after plugging the camper in to the campground pedistal before placing a load on the converter (ie., lights, water pump).
