Title: Replacing the Axle??
Post by: Lila on Jun 11, 2009, 04:17 PM
One of our tires is tilting in at the top.  Do I need a new axle???  Who in the Inland Empire does that.  I found Whippert's in Yucaipa.  Who else......

Doesnt sound good, take it to any trailer shop and have them look at it. Might not be an axle, could be wheel bearings but regardless I wouldnt drive it far until its checked.

If the axle is bent, it can be straightened. Call around to alignment and frame shops to find one that will check and straighten it, if necessary. It's just a matter of applying heat to the correct area. It's not a big deal.

Cold bending is the way.

That doooooooooo make a difference.

Now let me ask, is it a Dexter Torflex or an AL-KO Kober suspension ...?

Maybe I should ask what brand of popup camper are we talking here?

It's a 1995 Rockwood XL Signature Series...I have no idea what kind of axle and I have been unable to find the name of the axle in any paperwork I have, and I have all the paperwork from the original owner.  We actually pulled it up to Big Bear for the 4th....very slow and steady.  It still towes like a dream, but we can see the wheel tilted.

It'll have a metal plate on the axle beam and you can crawl under the camper with a flashlight and a rag....wipe the plate off, and read what it says.  That'll help you get going.

I'm sort of doubting that it's fixable, especially if it's a torsion style.  Plus, you can get a complete new axle for cheap compared to the labor $$ you may spend having a shop mess around with what you have, and then have it never actually be correct (and wear out tires, pull funny, sway, etc)

//www.northerntool.com sells complete torsion axles, and brake assemblies, and hubs.   As do many others.
