Title: Waterproofing
Post by: jpcjtrtj on Jun 21, 2009, 12:34 PM
We have a 2003 Coleman Carmel we've owned for a year and a half.  The first weekend we took it out, it rained like crazy and no leakage . . . YAY! :-()I'm wondering how often the sunbrella canvas needs waterproofing to keep us dry as we own the thing.  Any ideas?

I don't believe Sunbrella requires any maintenance.....if that's actually what your camper's "canvas" is made with.  Are you sure you don't have regular canvas?

Your canvas is Sunbrella and requires no re-waterproofing as long as you don't wash it with something that will remove the factory waterproofing. I have a 1995 Coleman popup with Sunbrella tenting and have never waterproofed it since new and have had no leaks whatsoever.

Unlike canvas which is a woven cotton fibre, Sunbrella is a acrylic material that resists mildew, color fading and staining, is breathable, and does not require any waterproof treatment. All in all it's a pretty good material used for PU 's.

Yes, most of the tenting is Sunbrella.  I have had to rewaterproof the tenting on my 1999 Coleman/Fleetwood PU.  I did that after cleaning the tenting.  If you decide to rewaterproof your Sunbrella use 303's High Tech Fabrig Guard.  That is what the company that makes Sunbrella recomends.  You can also buy special Sunbrella cleaner.:)
