Title: Receiver hitch options
Post by: LACamper on Jun 27, 2009, 11:46 PM
We just bought a slightly used 08 Xterra as our new tow vehicle. I stopped in Nissan and priced a trailer hitch from them earlier this week. They wanted $250 for the hitch, another $70 for the wiring connector, plus another $200 in labor if I let them do the work.
Someone suggested I order aftermarket parts online. The price is $150 for the hitch and a simple install I can do myself (I don't have to drill the frame). I still have to buy the electrical from Nissan though.
Is there a downside to using the aftermarket parts? Has anyone had a failure of a receiver hitch (cracks, etc?)? I'm certainly capable of installing a few bolts and doing the wiring assuming a decent set of instructions...

Having formerly worked at a Nissan Dealer.......go aftermarket and do your own thing.  You'll be money and quality waaaay ahead.  Stick with the known brands like Reese, etc.

To give you an idea on aftermarket installation, the place around the corner from me charges $350 and that gets you everything, including wiring for 7 pin round.

Would I do better by replacing the rear bumper with a shrockworks type rear w/ the trailer hitch included?

Can't answer that one, I don't know anything about 'em.  But I would think a frame mounted receiver would be alot stronger than a bumper mount.

No. Unless you need the tire carrier.
Wonder how much they weigh http://www.shrockworks.com/Xterra-Rear-Bumper-Only-2nd-Gen-pr-16168.html

I hadn't thought about the weight. I was thinking about rear clearance with the receiver hitch... I'll have to give them a call.
