Title: Exceeding towing capacity ?
Post by: rtt108 on Aug 04, 2009, 08:45 AM
Saw this in Acadia NP, and had to snap a picture.  This guy is gonna die on the next long down hill ... if his rear suspension lasts that long.

Some people are just absolutely clueless when it comes to towing trailers.
The front wheels are barely touching the road surface.

Here is an obvious reason why they designed WDH's.

I can't say too much................I've been close to that myself but that's ridiculous.

We towed with our Chrysler Concorde for awhile but it actually did a pretty good job and the car road pretty level (it has self-leveling suspension).

You're right though, if he goes down a grade with that thing, he's in serious trouble.

I'm okay with using a small vehicle to tow.  But I always try to stay within the capacity of the car !

I tow a Coleman Destiny that's 1000lbs empty, perhaps 1200lbs loaded, with a Toyota Matrix (1500lb towing capacity).  I put the family and gear in another car, just to stay well under the limits of the Toyota.  Even still, I don't like to go far.

But what this guy is doing is going to kill somebody.  IIRC the Taurus has 1000lb towing capacity.  Unless they have improved the AXOD-E tranny .. a LOT .. the tranny can't take that kind of stress.  There has to be 500lbs + on the tongue.  And that trailer can't weigh less than 2000lbs ?!

My hope is that the guy didn't get too far before the Highway Patrol pulled him over and made him un-hitch that thing.

My guess is, that trailer weighs closer to 3000# and I wouldn't even load my bikes like that on my truck, if they made it sag, even a little bit.

The trans, is the least of that guys worries. I wouldn't be surprised if he broke a rear axle pulling out of the driveway of that parking lot............and that would be the GOOD news.......he should be thankful if it doesn't brake at 60MPH, on the highway.

He had MA tags.  That puts him 200mi from home minimum.

Your right though, with the way that car is squatting if he starts to sway at 60mph there is no way he'll keep control.

I think that swaying is the least of his problems. Those Taurus's can barely stop themselves. They have very light brake rotors and over-heating the brakes would be very likely on that thing........God bless America.....at least some cop can't shoot him on the roadside.......(legally, that is)....:D

I bet that front storage area is full too!

There was a family with an old Starcraft 8 foot pup towing it with a Honda Accord at the campground a few weeks ago. Missed them pulling in and out, but I wondered too how long that car would last towing their pup.

That is crazy.  That person is not only putting the people in his/her car in danger but also others on the road.

I just got back from a 900 mile trip and I was worried about my pup being about  1/2 - 1 inch too low in the front.  A 2 inch drop is just a bit low and a 3/4" rise is just too high.  I need about a 1" drop.

After looking at this picture I guess I shouldn't worry.   ; )

I would have said, "There's no cure for stupid," had some other linquist not previously deployed it.

Maybe I should have just said, "Here's your sign...."

For most of us who tow, he doesn't need a sign; it's obvious.

On a serious note, I don't appreciate the pejoratives.
It is too easy to insult on a forum, hidden behind a keyboard.
It doesn't add to the discussion.

How about ignorant?

It's okay, those Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable models are "disposable".  Simply swap them out...:eyecrazy:

Yeah, no kidding.

Had I seen that, I would have called local law enforcement and said, "There's some ignorant white trash towing a boat anchor with a POS, can you peel someone off a donut and send them this direction?"

Out taking pretty pictures (see my sig).

I have a new rule.  If I tick someone off in a forum, I go away for a while.

Don't assume I'm back, though...
