Title: Okay here's how I carry my firewood to the campsite in my SUV
Post by: CajunCamper on Sep 30, 2009, 08:35 AM
Okay, this may sound silly to some of you, but it works for us. My issue with hauling wood in our van or suv was always the bugs and the mess as well as where to stack it and having the wood shift around during travel. Well I was at Sam's one day and I saw a large roll of plastic wrap and I thought, what if I made up idividual bundles of firewood and wraped them in this plastic wrap?

Well I bought the roll of plastic wrap and began wraping bundles of firewood, the results were that 1) I had bundles of wood that were easy for anyone in the family to carry. 2) the plastic wrap prevented bark and bugs from getting on the inside of my van. 3) the bundles were easy to stack and store anywhere and we didn't have to pile all the wood together as a matter of fact it made it easy to even mix the wood in with our camping gear whereever we needed to. 3) it keeps our firewood dry at the campsite even if we have rain. 4) It keeps the wood in nice tight bundles that don't shift around.

This process also really doesn't take very long at all. Just a few extra minutes while your in the process of gathering your wood for your camping trip and it's done.

Anyway, there you have it.

Unfortunately, the spread of the emerald ash borer (a type of beetle) has made it ill-advised (and in many cases, illegal) to transport firewood in much of the upper  midwest.

Some states say "no transporting across county lines," while others say firewood must come from a certified vendor.  This year, Minnesota was added to the list.  As far as I know, the only legal restriction here is in state and national parks and forests.  Your firewood in those places has to come from a DNR-certified vendor. $$$$

I'm pretty sure I've seen Gracy mention her husband in several posts. I'm therefore pretty sure while the rest of us are having a good time at the wedding/camping festivities, her current husband would most likely be a dreaded 'Unhappy Camper'. :(

I guess my point is, we might not want to invite him...:p

All in fun, of course...

Dee,
Mount that tub on an axle. Then have Dan tow it to the rallies full of wood. Simple procedure to unhook the tub/trailer and roll it into the fire pit. Point the "torch of enlightenment" at the tub and you have just saved yourself a ton of work unloading and carrying wood.

What? It could work......
You might need to replace the tub every trip, unless we can rig it up to dump somehow.

The last time that I made a suggestion like that, Dee ended up with that torch........I've regretted it ever since......Now I have to be on my best behavior.....

There is a vendor here on the central left coast that markets bundled firewood of oak for -bq and such in bundles of 5 sticks or so and are sold at local markets.  They cost about 5 bucks a bundle and it is wrapped with that pallet type wrap plastic and is very convenient to handle.

Large grocery bags and Suran wrap looks pretty cool, but nothing transports firewood better that a pickup truck!   :D

Could that be "California Hot Wood" with a red flame on the box?...I was once their accounting manager. They sell throughtout California and a few locations in Nevada. At least that was a few years ago....

Since I camp mostly in the states that have some infestations of the Emerald Ash Borer, I no longer transport firewood.  Back when I did, I used two large folding boxes made of corrugated plastic.  When the wood was unloaded at the campsite, the boxes folded flat into the truck or SUV.  There was no mess in the vehicle and no wasted space transporting back an empty container.

Since I can't always get firewood purchased the first night camping at a new location, I carry a few of the 6-pound manufactured commercial wax logs that burn up to four hours each so I can at least have something.  Kroger's has them on sale for $1.99 each.

Actually it is Nick's firewood and it used mostly for -bq ing Santa Maria Style.  I have used that "Hot Wood" before and it does crank hot and fast, but does not last as long as oak which a lot us prefer here even in our fireplaces when it gets cold.
It is getting closer to the time to burn a fire in the fire place and cook with the oven and make the house smell all homey.

Plastic wrap's not a bad idea, and I like the idea of burning the wrapper to return the molecules to their earthly origin!  Just not being downwind. :yikes:
Seriously, what brand is better than "Charlie's Own Roadside Pick".  Just happen to have almost 2 cords neatly stacked up on the side of my house.  Husqvarna 455 Rancher.  Eucalyptus, readily available everywhere in SoCal, and burns like oak.  :theking:
