Title: Alcohol heaters
Post by: forestwalker on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
We encountered a couple who were using a alcohol fueled space heater
on a recent camping trip.We had never seen this type of heater before.Do
any of you have an alcohol heater ? Do they work well ? How about cost, and
safety ? Who sells them ? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

forestwalkerThis was interesting, so I thought I d look around the web for some answers.  I found an interesting page on heaters [link=http://www.boatingworldonline.com/News.htm?CD=749&ID=2715]from Boating World[/link]

 SPACE Heaters

Your next step in the heat chain is a liquid-fueled space heater, and this is where safety becomes a concern. Any heater with a flame of any sort ? solid fuel, alcohol or one of the various gases ? can be dangerous in a closed compartment such as your boat cabin. The flame not only consumes oxygen but also produces carbon monoxide, both of which can be deadly. For that reason, any heater with a flame requires plenty of ventilation, and these heaters should never be used inside a cabin.

I would guess you could equate inside a cabin to mean inside a pop up.  I found a few other articles, but while they supported the statement above, the information was burried in other text and would not be easy to copy over.

forestwalkerSounds interesting but dangerous.  I would use alcohol, but not in a heater.   Why waste any?

forestwalkerAlcohol doesn t belong in the burner, unless it is that bad blinding type. ANy alcohol which comes into contact with me disappears pretty fast [:)]
