It is 11:30 pm and I am sleeping last night.
The newspaper person (The one who is supposed to give me a job) calls me and asks for my help. One of his truckers didn t report to duty, 1,400 newspapers are in a parking lot, nobody to pick to them or protect them from people. Can I please go and pick them up. He is 1.5 hours away can t make it, he understands if I say no, but can I do it please ? He also mumbles that there will be changes pretty soon, and he is not happy wit this particular guy doing the trucking and implies that I will get his job. ( 700 bucks a month, not gross)
So, I get up, take all the newspapers in an empty mall parking lot, sheees, that IS a lot of newspapers and distribute them to the carriers this morning. Which I get paid for, I have no problems with doing it. He also mentioned that I could name my price for getting him out of this difficult situation and he would pay it, little bit later, he said that within reason of course, which is understandable. This morning I named my price (Left a voicemail, couldn t catch him), MY Camry needs a batter, can he please buy one [:D][:D][:D]. It isa round 70 bucks or so, we will see if he meant what he said.
I have a feeling that he is using me when he absolutely needs me or when he is in a difficult situation and doesn t want to upset his regular guys. And just keeps showing me the carrot so I do these irregular things without whining (Well, we need money, I would do those things even if ther was no carrot).
I do not want to make the guy upset as even though the money we make thru him is minimal it is the only income I can generate. How do I let him know that I feel little bit used and really need to have those promises to come through now !.
Telling him to get lost when he calls me is not an option , so what do I do ? If I get that trucking job, I can afford to buy a PU !!!!!! so formulate carefully here [;)]

birolYou might try...this is a bit risky, and I m not taking the risk, you are...try telling him that you think someone else is about to make you an offer. Until then, you are still willing to take the odd jobs (assuming you are).
It should make him swing one way or the other. If there really is a job, he should offer it to you. If not, you won t keep hanging on to nothing.

I agree with AB. It s well past the time for him to put up or shut up. No one likes to be " strung along" . AB s suggestion is a good one. To fortify it, you might check the UPS and FEDX locations for part time work. They re always looking for people to work odd shifts around here. Good luck!
birolHe just called, the regular guy who does the trucking and skipped the Friday wanted to do the SUnday. He asked me if I had rather do it, I said yes, he said go ahead and do it, I will tell the other guy he doesn t have to go. Yeeeeyyyy (lil bit more income eh). And then he surprised me when I was just about to hang up, and said, he would take care of the battery and he wanted to talk to me tomorrow.
We will see what happens. I am not sure if I can pull off the somebody is offering me a job thing, this thing is only on Friday and midnight Sundays .. I might not be able to come up with a believable thing .... I will play by the ear tomorrow when we talk though .....

birolWhy not tell him flat out what you are thinking. Tell him if it is only going to be occasional work that you will do it, but you want to know if there is really any chance of the job you are expecting.

I called him and left a voice mail. I am sure he will call back today( we shall se [>:]). I am tempted to tell him, when we meet;so;face to face, what you recommended. That s what I was thinking I should do , nothing like a dosage of honesty and willingness to work to smooth a man out if he has any real worik to offer me. I am really good at talking when I can see the body language of people so I will have to make him take time from his schdule and be in a conversation mood.
I was dreaming yesterday night that we were getting that Bantam and camping and stuff ....... One day hopefully ..

I feel horrible for you[:(]!! I can see how your situation is rather annoying. If I were you, I would want to be frank and up front with the guy too and just say " hey, is there a job, or not??" ......But....at the same time, I know about wanting to make any and every penny you possibly can.
I ve been in a situation similar to yours, so I can understand the frustration. I worked 3 crummy little part-time jobs at minimum wage for about 8 months or so just to make my ends meet (and Thank GOD my parents were able to help, otherwise my beloved horse would have had to go[>:])I really wish I could offer you some help. All I can say is hang in there, something good has got to turn up soon!![&:].

I know that you have been long in the tooth waiting for a job to come your way... so you don t have to take my advice, but reading along the posts in this thread, it sounds like he s doing a lot of talking (when you can get in touch with him), and not much else.
Maybe I haven t heard all the details about this job he s offering you. $700.00 CDN doesn t go very far towards buying a Bantam, let alone putting groceries on the table, and as I understand it, that s the monthly rate before deductions. Once you factor in all that will be coming off that amount, I wouldn t be surprised if you are left with about $500.00 in hand (about $125.00 a week).
Birol, with the skills you have in the IT world, you should be able to come up with something much better IMHO! I would take what he owes you, and hit the job mart once again. I know that s a tough decision to make, but my guess here is that this is one of those jobs which never really amounts to anything worth putting the time and effort into it.

You have a valid point, but I can t even find positions to apply for anymore. That si the sad part. When I was laid off, there were bunch of open positions, now it all dried up. I am still looking (Tomorrow I have a networking meeting) , but it doesn t look very promising. Of course being 42 and out of a job for almost two years is also not helping (But I am a bonehead, I just ignore that [:)]).
We have a balanced budget right now, well more or less, so 700 net a month is a big help for us. I know, I didn t study 5 years at the university for this, but, I am trying to be adaptive and make money anyways I can while trying to get back on my both feet again.
So, that 700 is net, and would have paid the bantam s monthly payments, but it is gone now anyways . And I don t think he has anything for me other than the regular stuff I already do, and the odd extra ones he throws in now and then. I will believe him when/ if I start doing what he promised me.
