Title: Look what I did today
Post by: Firefyter-Emt on Sep 28, 2003, 07:05 PM
Not camping related.. but seeing as how the camper wheels have not been seen for a couple months and show no sign of doing so..  We have to do something to keep busy.. (no, not that.. [;)] ) Anyway.. Just some more automotive stuff.. I added a very invasive addition to my 4Runner today... It takes some (word filter here) to take a 3 1/2"  hole saw to your truck!!

Can you guess what I added today?? Let s just say I can go a little deeper into trouble now..

I have to tell you though, it felt good to wash my truck by hand with all this dang salt!! I have to use touchless car washes dur to all the " stuff"  on my truck, and they just do not clean very well..

Firefyter-EmtIt looks like you did a good job. Pardon my ignorance, but what exactly is it?

Firefyter-EmtGary.. if I go in deeper than the middle of the hood I can open the sunroof and stick my head out [:D]

Shirley you jest... (hee hee) you can not tell?? I added a " Safari Snorkel"  which will allow me to go very deep into water.. As long at you keep going water does not enter the truck, and I have many other changes to keep vital things safe on the inside as far as electronics and all my axles and transmission have breather hoses that are at least as high as the hood, but I plan on routing them into the snorkel to " breathe"  from there...  It takes very little water to blow a motor, if you let even less than the amount of a can of soda to enter the motor you can throw a rod thru the block.. leaving you not only stranded, but out 3 or 4 thousand for a new motor.. A lot of cars & trucks in the US are not made for any driving other than back and forth to shopping malls. I have seen cars even still take on enough water thru a large puddle to blow a motor

If you look at a lot of shows on TLC that are out of Austrialia, you would see these often.. A lot of them come as standard equipment..

Do I have a need for this you ask?? I will admit to having about a foot of the hood  dunked under water while I was in VA 2 years ago.. ( I had a home made snorkle, but that was the very limit of that one.. Had I stopped moving it would of been all over...

Firefyter-EmtIwas going to ask if you d thought about the breathers. One more don t forget the one on the gas tank if it isn t covered by the filler cap. Also have you thought about the heater/AC vent? Buddies truck was a mess when the blower fan sucked up everything from water to mud to what looked like guppies.[:o][:D] The drains on the  Air vent only takes so much.

Firefyter-EmtThank you for explaining that for me. I guess I have never known a vehicle that needed a snorkel. But being that I am land locked and have no desire to drive through water in my little Chevy Metro I guess that leads to my ignorance. Hope it works great for you! And don t suck up any guppies! [:o][:D]

Firefyter-EmtThank you all.. Hard to believe it is a 1992 with over 130k on it, Huh? and the best thing of all it is all paid for now!! (well has been for a little while, but it still feels good)
BTW, I have a link off on my camper web-site to my web site for my 4Runner (my other hobby)

Mike, that is a good idea.. I have to look at that!  BTW, water in the gas tank is easy to fix on a 4Runner, the gas tank has a drain plug and gas floats on water, so all the water can be drained off the bottom..

I think one of the best things with this addtion is the stares it gets now.. heck, I have even started getting Jeep people to give me a thumbs up ..lol! ( But, then again.. I would not understand it..)

Firefyter-EmtO.K. Fire you would love my son. He builds 4x4 s for a hobby the resales them. I will e-mail some pics of him in the mud and water. Now remimber when you try it out to make sure you have a snorkle for yourselve to. And I will only say one thing and then i will quit. Make sure you change the oil in the truck when you are done playing. My DS has blown 2 engines because he didn t change the oil right away. I am just teasing . That is one sharp looking truck though.

Firefyter-EmtWater in the motor is really easy to see, you will see it on the oil cap, But the axles and such are a pain..

Firefyter-EmtI told Holly about it, because we have just about needed it down here. The flooding has been awful. There have been some roads 8-20 feet under water. We went looking at land on Saturday (in the rain), and got off on some easements to get to " for sale"  land. We had to use 4wd for much of it, but fortunately never came across deep water.

There is a ball park down the street that is virtually covered...4 fields! And the school in our neighborhood now has 5 foot basketball goals, if you measure from water surface to the rim!

I don t think it truely needed a snorkel, it s just the " coolness factor"  was to much to resist!

Firefyter-EmtLOL.. Tom you nut.. Have you ever heard of that radio show?? They have a website up but I don t think it is active.. I like to listen to radio shows while I work at night, so I scour the net for good sites.. I came across this site from the " Focus on the Family"  site.. I listened to the trailers, but you can not seem to get in touch with anyone via e-mail..

ANYWAY.. I just kinda like that line " Just South of Normal"  it is kinda catchy..

 http://www.justsouthofnormal.com/about.htm

BTW.. in the defence of my snorkle... I do wheel the truck, I do play in rivers, and a $4000 motor is a hard thing to swallow and a big " kick your self in the butt"   when viewed as hindsight.. [:D]

Remember, you do not need to put the truck deep in water, just need to get it into the motor.. Most cars & trucks take the air facing foward, under the head light.. Now add in a " splash"  factor and you can sieze a motor in a foot of water..
