birolWe actually feed that darn dog regular food (no snacks of people food(well hardly)), the same thing the old speed bump eats.  We also put the food up at 6, let him out befoer bed time..etc..that dang dog still does it.  If we lay out newspaper...he just goes somewhere else.  Problem is is that he s the wife s dog...but I m the one that ends up cleaning up after it all the time.

rednekrubbrduckWhat is the best way to get a dog cheap ? We are thinking like a shit-zu (sp), chuava (sp) or a boston terrir, all small dogs, but the price at pet stores range from 599 C$ to 2,000 C$.

Any advice for us on how to get them cheap ? I checked the humane-society s web pages but they have only big dogs. We want to get one as a puppy and bond properly. Our house is small and we don t want a big dog.

 Fire away ......

birolI am #8 on the list???  That surprises me.

Guess you don t know much about me because I am silent on the subject.  Just spend my time here leaving messages about Nick-Neff-Cough events we ll be attending or organizing.  The list is long, so lots of posts.

 Upcoming:

Reyes the Roof Rally at Point Reyes--next weekend
Axe Me about my Weekend Rally--Sacramento Delta in March
Great SLO Escape Rally--San Luis Obispo in April
Malibu RV Park Mini Rally--Malibu in April
May 2003 So Cal Roundup--Southern California in May
2003 California Gold Rush Rally--Sierra foothills in June

Post a few posts in each thread, add them to the posts in the past rallies, and suddenly I find myself #8 on the list.  Guess it makes sense.

Hope you now know ONE THING about me......I love to use my pop-up and have no qualms about traveling.  For more, ask surfcal, sammyslave, my DW G-Whiz, or most any of the Nick-Neff-Coughers.  We haven t missed a rally yet.

birolGetting a dog cheap?...ours ran into our yard when I was mowing.  The originall owner said we could have him if we wanted him (he did seem a lil eager to be rid of him...now I know why).  Bout as cheap as you can get.

 birolBirol,

Let me suggest that you decide which breed you want and then contact a rescue organization for that breed.  You can probably find information about the breeds and rescue groups at the Canadian Kennel Club s website:  www.dogs-in-canada.com.

Rescue groups often have dogs available for a very small fee.  Please do not get a dog from a pet shop.
Title: RE: # of posts !
Post by: Tim5055 on Feb 16, 2003, 08:17 PM
birolI fully agree with wssfetch, purchasing a dog at a pet shop only supports the " back yard breeders"  who have no other reason to breed their dogs other than greed.

Unless you plan to show or enter AKC competitions stick with breed rescue organizations.

I have volunteered with German Shepherd Rescue and see the conditions some dogs are in when found.

DSo research on the breeds you may be interested in and verify that their temperament  and personality are a fit with your household.  Each breed has been specifically bread through the years for specific temperaments and you can usually tell what they will be like.  You don t want to end up with a breed that is very active if what you are looking for is a lap dog.

Please do the research before you get the dog.  If will save you and the dog a lot of frustration later.

 SurfcalTracy aka tlhdoc,

I never really gave your gender much thought either, but you are very knowledgable about the mechanics of pop-ups.  Where did you get all that experience?  Were your parents, siblings or friends mechanically inclined?  I know that I inherited woodworking and handyman skills from my grandfather and father while I picked up on mechanical skills from my uncle and brothers.  I also have too much experience in the school of hard knocks.  I now know more about what not to do that what to do when fixing things due to my schooling.

Our current Dalmatian is a rescued dog.  Our veterinarian contacted us when this dog needed a new home.  You may want to contact the local vet offices and let them know what you are looking for.

Miss-Teri and Stopher I have had a PU for 7 seasons, and I don t like to pay the mechanic any more than I have too.  I think I may be mechanically incline, but no one in my family is.  If I see something done I can usually do it myself after that.  I can read how to do something and do it that way, but see it done is better for me.  Thanks for the complements.

birolBirol, Don t try just getting the younger one - if you re gonna take it camping get whichever one is quieter for your peace of mind!  [;)]  We got lucky that ours will sit quietly in her crate as long as there is a radio or white noise on in the background.
I ve worked (no money, so actually volunteered) for a humane society for over eight years.  I rescue from animal shelters and just at the shelters I personally rescue from, I get hundreds of tiny dogs every year.  Last week I rescued two half Chihuahua puppies (about 8 weeks old) from a shelter, so there are many, many great dogs in need of rescue and almost half of what I rescue are purebreds (lots of Chihuahuas, Pomeranians, Dachshunds, Lhasas, and Shih Tzus).  Most are young, in great health, and have no behavioral " issues" .
Oh, did I mention I got my Collie (with registration papers) at 5 months old, and my Chihuahua from a shelter, too?  [;)]
What the rescue will be looking for is an indoor home, a fenced-in yard, someone who will match the needs of the particular dog, and previous history with animals (ie. Did you keep them until they died of old age, etc.).  I would have no problem adopting something out to a family that will take it on at least a couple of camping trips a year as the dogs love pop-ups almost as much as we do!  [:D]

SurfcalI was thinking the dog would be on a leash or ona leash inside the PU when it is not out.  Are they that newvous which make them noisy ? I remember reading somewhere that small dogs are the most noisy variety, is that correct ?

Basically we were thinking that whereever we go, camping, trips, it would come with us being so small. I am sure a small crate for it will disappear in the back of the windstar.

Reason we wanted the small one was or it not to have issues yet, and being still trainable. We will see if they call today.

Small dogs are definately the noisiest (well, not counting some herding breeds!), but it s an individual thing and some are actually pretty quiet.  Before I fostered my Chi and ended up keeping her I hated the breed.  I always thought of them as mean, shivering, noisy things.  Owning one completely changed my mind.

Good luck, and keep us updated!

SurfcalMost dog breeds are much better when you own them yourself.  I have always seen how others react to German Sheppards.  They are great dogs and very loyal to the family who owns them.  When I was growing up, I had two German Sheppards.  One was only friendly to the family and would protect " her family"  with all of her being.  The other German Sheppard was as gentle a dog as they come.  I believe (because I knew the dogs  parents) that their personalities had more to do with the type of dogs their parents were than the breed itself.  Because the DW talked me into it, we have a Golden Retriever.  Actually, she is my second Golden.  They are absolutely the best dogs in everyway in my opinion.  The first Golden Retriever we had was a wedding present that we gave to each other.  She has since passed away, but was a smart and loving dog.  Our current Golden (Miss Molly Puddleduck) is probably not quite as smart, but a sweet and gentle dog.  For me, give me a big dog anyday over a smaller dog.  It s just my preference as I like laid-back dogs much better.  The Goldens are also great with children and we have never had any problems what-so-ever with the Golden Retrievers snapping, biting or even growling at the kids.   I just wish the kids would realize that Miss Molly isn t a big fan of playing a horse.

SurfcalGetting back to the subject-humane societies-
I had a chance to work(community service-don t ask) at the local humane society for two months(weekends). I got to know all the pets(dogs, cats, rabbits, snakes, etc.) What a wonderful organization. Most, however, are funded locally, or take donations. They are taking donations of food, litter, laundry detergent, aluminum cans, etc, for their needs. My assignment was cleaning cages and pens, exercising animals, and general maintenance such as lawn mowing and repairs. The local chapter is having problems with the local city council(3 directors in 1 year) so fund raising is very difficult.
So, please, if you can, support your local Humane Society, in any way you can.[8D]

Hey Jim---you feel free to wander around the NNC forum any time you want.  Too bad you can t experience the wafting odors as you lurk.  Please note the early morning aroma of freshly perked coffee mixed with Mike s choriso.  In the afternoon its a variety of cheeses to go with the wines that were sampled at the local wineries, and in the evening---what s that smell???  Oh, that s the ceremonial NNC Rally Candle---for a moment I thought it might have been some of that " Whackie Tobackie."   Nope, not a single Zig Zag paper in the whole group...it just seems that there should be.  Must be the salt air does something to brain cells.

 Hi Tammy,
Thanks for responding and welcoming me aboard!  It took me a long time before I posted my first message but I am getting more comfortable.  I am sure in time I will not be shy at all!  I don t spend a lot of time on the site but I always enjoy it when I do get on and I am learning a lot about popupping just from reading some of the threads.
