For the first time since April of 2001, we are without a camper. Sold the hybrid yesterday and the truck will be going next.

Looking for a season of either very little camping or tent camping before we seriously look into the motorhome.

Nope, you are not getting rid of me though.

MOTORHOME?  Once you turn to the dark side, forever will it rule your destiny!  :Z

Still, it must be sad when you see all those memories get towed away by a complete stranger.

Austin (Not expecting an endorsement from you!)

The old fogies I hang out with have unloaded their motor homes because of the  of gas mileage, insurance and maintnance cost facors. However, one couple did buy one and toured the country for a year, got back home sold it and now have a small popup they tow with a 4-banger Subaru Forester.

I started out with a tent(s), went to an Airstream, down to a smaller TT, down to a larger PU and now down to PeeWee.

I've been looking into the idea of a Subaru. On my recent trip to Alaska I noted in the Juneau area that Subaru was the number one choice of vehicles ... you see them everywhere.  Of course, there were pick-up trucks but they were used more for what trucks were intended to be used for. Very few SUVs. Should mention, too, gas was $3.59 a gallon!

Subaru's all wheel drive system is insane in bad weather.  My buddy has a '96 Legacy sedan and he and his wife think nothing of driving it to Tahoe or anywhere else in the throws of winter to go sking.  I think the only time they've ever put snow cables on it, was when told to do so by the National Park Service while skiing in Yosemite. (We were there the day before and it was so bad I had both the front and rear of the Suburban (4x4) cabled up.)

They get mid 30's with it on the highway.

Of course the Subaru doesn't hold a candle to Audi's quattro system (we have an A6 wagon) but that's another topic entirely.

Chas,  don't know whether to say sorry or congratualtions.

Just be sure that you do get something and fairly soon.

If your camping in a tent near us, you can come in the trailer and keep dry. :)

Good luck on your quest.

Oh, one more thing, how many mods do you have planned for the motorhome already?

:U   that's why we won't be losing him anytime soon - he's probably gonna keep haunting the board to find all kinds of new mod ideas for his new rig, when he gets it!  :p

It IS sad to see an old friend go - in many ways, I still miss my tiny PUP.  But the important thing is to not give up on the outdoor life  - whether in a tent, PUP, hybrid or hardside - you just gotta get out there camping!

I'm sure you won't be camperless for long.  Did you keep the solar panels?

Nope, I can't stand stripping off good mods.

Thinking about a wind turbine this time around:D

I do have a couple of cots and a nice 9X15 tent that I used for my trip around the country.

My truck is just a tow vehicle. I have a car I use for commuting back and forth to work. I may as well have had a motorhome with the camper and truck parked in my back driveway all winter long. The motorhome will be a little less cramped while driving and I'll pull my car behind it. Should save on gas after we get there I guess.

I am hoping to spend winters some where in the vicinity of Yuma AZ after I retire (in 20 years).

Right now my 14 year old daughter is taking it much worse than I am. Heck it was about time to winterize and park it until April or May anyway. Next April DW and I are going on a week long Western Caribbean Cruise and that should help us a little.

For DD, we may rent a camper that is already set up on a site for a week.

I'm with Gene on this one ~ don't know whether to say sorry or congratulations.

Guess it's just time to move on to new adventures, eh?  Sure hope your travels bring you through Minnesota again ... or maybe my travels should bring me to the northeast ~ there are a lot more of you there!   :D

Either way ~ happy camping and I'm glad you're going to stick around.

Charlie if I make it to Maine in 2008, tell A. that she can come camp with us in a PU.  I hope you enjoy being camper-less.  I don't think I could handle it myself.:)

:yikes: CAMPERLESS :yikes:    Guess that means setting up the tent for that real early spring campout (not sure the roof will withstand the weight of the solar panels)....poor Angela

You've been talking 'bout a MoHo for  a bit now.. have fun hunting for the right one.

You have never seen me with a camper. I went to MN with a tent and will probably do a little tenting next year. C'mon over!!!!
