We re going to be in this area in August.....planning to spend 4 nights in the area and spend some time at Arches NP and Canyonlands NP....

Can anybody help with a campground recommendation?  We need someplace that takes reservations ~ don t like to arrive someplace with 4 tired, hungry, cranky kids only to find " no room at the cg" !!

 Thanks in Advance ~

KellyAre you looking to camp in Moab itself?  In public or private?  We ve camped at Dead Horse Point SP, they take reservations, you have to bring water with you (they have to haul it in, so don t want people filling tanks there), but they do have flush toilets. They have electric at all sites, though it doesn t look super-powered - we don t have anything to use it for really, thought about using it to recharge the lantern, didn t need to.  DHPSP is out on the same road that leads to the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands.  We did Canyonlands & Dead Horse itself, as well as driving to Arches and into Moab.  It d be a bit far to hit the Needles district of Canyonlands.
There is a private campground, I think, just at the intersection of the road out to Dead Horse Point (313) and the road into Moab (191). There is supposedly a private campground just outside of the Needles district, have not checked it out.
2 years ago I took a friend and her daughter in early June.  It was hot enough that we ended up doing one major thing a day, starting early, then going back to veg at camp by mid to late afternoon.  I think the nasty gnats should be gone by the time you re planning, we ended up with head nets for camp - which we thought looked odd until we met the woman who d tied a bandana over her entire face (the gnats are not all over the area, just some places, June-July, so I ve been told).  DH & I have never encountered them, we usually go in May or Sept, the time we stayed at DHSP in mid-late August we did not find them either.
You might do a dogpile.com search on Moab, etc., I know there are some private campgrounds in Moab, but we only camp at public ones so have not looked too closely at them.

KellyKelly, What a strange coincidence. I never loook at this forum but the " Moab"  header caught my eye! Last year on our western " photography"  trip, we rented a cabin here: http://www.moab-utah.com/archview/archview.html  The campsites are a little close and it s not a " rustic" , out of the way place but there is no other CG as centrally located to Moab, Arches and Canyonlands. They also have a well stocked store and gas station.

SkipPThanks, Skip!!  Fancy meeting you here, huh?
Was just contemplating moving this to the general forum.....seems you aren t the only one who never looks at this forum!  Thanks for the info.   Not too concerned with  rustic  during this portion of our trip ~ we re gonna be tourists here!!  LOL

KellyIf you send to the state of Utah they will send you a nice information book that lists all of the private campgrounds and numbers to call.  We have always stayed at Arches but even in late September and October it is hard to get in.
