okay birol here are the instructions:

 items you will need:

 cardboard egg carton(s)
dryer lint or woodshavings or sawdust
paraffin wax or old candles, or crayons
 old coffee can

fill each egg cup with lint (or shavings or sawdust) pack tightly
melt wax in can (placed in a pan of water)
pour wax into cups filled with lint (or shavings or sawdust)

let wax soak in and pour more in egg cup if needed to make it full

 cut egg cups apart

when you get ready to use them just light a corner of the egg cup. it will stay lit for quite a while and long enough for your wood to start burning, as long as you are not using wet or green wood [8D]

edited: birol I hope you can understand this now! *pops birol on the forehead with a trout*

ShirleyTYes, however - please do NOT use your wife s cookie sheets to place the egg carton on while pouring hot wax.  You will need something (maybe try cardboard), but I can assure you - she will not be pleased [:@]  My darling firefyter tried this and I was not amused when I turned on the oven - he had put it back into the oven for ? - and then the whole kitchen filled with wax smoke  [:@]  But he was forgiven when I needed 5-6 of those firestarters to get a brush fire going in the back yard!  They do come in handy - and last forever.

never did get that fire going, even with those firestarters and two dead Christmas trees [&:] Can t understand how he got it going five minutes later?  OH I GOT IT!  I got it warmed up for him, this explains so much!

ShirleyTIf you can t find the paper egg cartons (they are hard to come by here).  You can send your kids to collect pinecones at the park.  You can just dip them in the melted paraffin or use old crayons, broken candles, birthday candles. (I save it all).  They make excellent firestarters.

Oh, or since you have newspaper, you can make trench candles,  cut your newspaper in  about 4 in strips.  Roll it up like a mini log and tie with some string.  Dip it in melted paraffin.

This is a great kid project!  They love to make them.

ShirleyTAfter sleeping on it and being able to think more clearly I think I should just delete my post and mail birol some fire starters. I don t want him hurting himself trying to keep all the directions straight [8D] HA HA HA.

Actually birol if you will send me your addy I will be glad to put a few in the mail to ya. I have a big batch now and almost have enough dryer lint to make another big batch.

ShirleyTBirol - another option that is less messy and/or time consuming but still homemade and creative is the old candlestick trick - break up old taper candles (or buy them cheap -less than .10 each at a Big Lot or Odd Lot)  --- cut them into 1 1/2 - 2"  sticks and wrap them (tootsie roll style) in wax paper - throw them in a ziplock and stow them with our camping gear...They work FANTASTIC!!!!

By the way did you check out Pete s camping page yet????  Just wondring what your thoughts were.

You certainly have found the magic of getting PUT folks excited in the midst of winter!!!!  Thank you!!!!!

ShirleyTI have the dryer lint and the wax saved but it easier to use a few pieces of quick burning charcoal.
You can use the small paper cups made for bathrooms since it is so difficult now to get the carboard egg cartons if you want to make the fire starters.

birol

ShirleyTWhy can t you guys find the cardboard egg cartoons ? We have tons of them here, want some ? What do they put the eggs in the styrofoam thingies ? I hate them.

ShirleyT

ShirleyTI am sure there are easier and cleaner methods of making and having firestarters. I prefer the method I listed because it is a wonderful project for my daughter and I to do together and it is also recycling products.

ShirleyTCheck out the last issue of PUT, they made egg carton fire starters.

Acts 2:38 girl

ShirleyTDH told his Mom he needed one egg carton tray - like the kind you get at BJ s.  It has about 24 spots for eggs.  Well, she took on the " mission"  and delivered him a TRASH BAG full of egg carton containers!!!  I guess she was asking all the neighbors and friends for them!!  I think they would still be handing them over unless DH said something!!  [:D] These retired Mom s  LIVE for this sort of resourceful thing!! [:D]  We ended up throwing a ton out - after all, how many fire starters does a person need?
I should ve put them on e-bay!!  They would ve sold as well as the five snowballs from our last snowstorm!!  (no - it was NOT us who sold them!)
