Since I ve never been out with ya ll, I had a quick question.

 Do ya ll....

 A.  Keep your dogs leashed at all times

 B.  Keep him/her leashed most of the time, except when letting them run off some energy in a private area

 or

 C.  Don t really leash them (small dog, dog sticks to me like glue, well trained, etc)

Reason I m asking is because my two babies have totally opposite personalities.  My female (Britt mix) loves people and always wants to say HOWDY to other dogs (she s not too fond of little kids tho , must be the arthritis), and my Boxer LOVES kids and little dogs (especially Pugs, Bostons, Yorkies, etc), but can t stand anything his size or bigger.

I don t want to run the risk of ruining someone elses fun time with their pupster, so if there s gonna be a lot of larger off-leashed doggies, I may leave him home during this trip.  Ofcourse he d be devistated if he knew how many kids he was missing out on! LOL  [:D]

Just wanted ya ll 2 cents to help me make my decision.

JemJen24Around a campground we use one of those screw-in-the-ground tethers with a 20 foot lead so my dog has plenty of room to move around.  We try to make sure she has shade and a water dish nearby with some sort of chewbone though most of the time the squirrels in the trees keep her fascinated.

She s leashed all the time walking around the campground otherwise she ll want to visit every single person and share their dinners.  I think most people get a little edgy if they see a dog off leash, especially if they have kids.

If I m out on a trail and there isn t much cactus around I ll let her off the leash so she can run.  Out in the open she s easy to keep an eye on her but in the mountain woods she tends to stay back in the trees and run parallel to the trail.  I think she watches me and keeps up because I haven t lost her yet and she seems to come around when I whistle.

 JemJen24Hi Jennifer,

I feel that it depends on the dog and the owners. Technically in all of the state parks, all pets are supposed to be leashed at all times. We ve seen some dogs who are very well behaved along with responsible owners. Then other times we had totally untrained dogs come from the next campsite over and get into all of our stuff without the owners saying a word.

We were at Tyler one year and the park ranger warned a group twice about keeping thier dogs on a leash, they didn t listen and he ended up writing them a ticket with a fine.

JemJen24good, then I ll bring him.  HE s always leashed :)

JemJen24Also, the SP regulations state a 6 ft. leash. We ve seen several people with those, what I consider useless, retractable leashes where the dog might as well not be on a leash. While walking our dog around the CG he is on an 18 - 24 in leash. While out on the trail he gets the 6 footer.

JemJen24

JemJen24(glances at the two Flexi leashes hanging on her wall)  Errrmmm....are they still useless if you use them properly?!  I have Flexi (retractable) leashes, but only UN-track them when we re in a woodsy area or a big field.  You know, give s the dogs more leg room without unleashing them.  Otherwise, they are leashed and walk right along side me without extending the leash.  [:)]

Anyhow...glad to see we have so many responsibly dog owners!  Looking forward to meeting you all (and your babies).  I ll just make Willard hold Pharaoh while I kiss all those doggy faces. ha!  [:D]

Ohhhh, reminds me, gotta load the doggy bisquits and maybe I can remember to bring some liver treats.  Make those puppy noses go SNIFF SNIFF.  [;)]

Gatsmommy

JemJen24When we bring ours (which we re not for Inks) He s always on his leash. We would be guilty of walking him on the retractable in the campground occasionally, but I ll rein him in if anyone else is around, or cars are coming. But usually when he s being wakled he s on his normal one, because we have to use a head halter, or my arm would be pulled out of it s socket by the end of the walk/hike

In the campground I like to tie a clothesline up and put him on a runner type thing. If we can t do that we have a stake.  So far we haven t needed to use the stake and I m glad, I m not confident he wouldn t pull it out if he saw see another dog, person, deer, armadillo, racoon, etc. to go make friends with.

 JemJen24Pharaoh... cool name.

JemJen24

 JemJen24Thanks Bob! [:)]

HE s a pretty great dog.  Has visited local elementary schools for show n tell and carries our groceries in for us.  Not the milk or eggs tho! We learned that lesson the hard way!  [;)]

JemJen24We keep our guys in a portable pen, it s a bit small, so they are walked often.  We tried stake outs, but these dogs have been raised together since puppy hood, and were not happy if they could not get to each other to play.  We use a 6ft leash for walking, that I just pull up shorter if we meet other dogs.

The beagle LOVES kids, while the terrier basically tolerates them well.  He s never tried to be aggressive with our kids, but he won t tolerate pulling and tugging like the beagle.

I think they may be with us at Inks, asking the neighbor to feed them for almost a week is a little much.  I ll probably bathe them and they ll come along, they miss us so much if we have to leave them at home.

JemJen24

JemJen24They re small...Pharaoh should get along with them.  [:)]

Kids can do whatever they want to do to him.  He just tries to lick  em in the face.  He s SOOOOOOOOOOOO good with kids.  I love that  [:D]

TheWallRocks

JemJen24I swear by that vinyl coated cable.  They make it in very small sizes so it would be suitable for a small dog.  The beauty of it over rope is it does not get all yucky from dirt and water.  I put a clip on each end of a 50 foot line and just toss one end around a tree.  It works great.

50  of the small diameter stuff is less than $5.00

PopUpTrio

JemJen24We bring our 4.5 lb. Yorkie, Taz.  He stays on a leash or tieout at all times.  The site of one squirrel with him untied and we d never see him again.

JemJen24

JemJen24I love Yorkies!  Pharaoh has a Yorkie friend named TC.  [:)]
