Refilling the little 1# propane bottles, it that actually legal? Seems the disclaimer on the bottle s says never to refill them.

I spotted these before, and have heard positive and negative about doing this, but kind of curious about them.

Gone-CampingYou could probably do it, But the pressure would only equalize. Right?

Then I ve heard of the little bottles not always sealing. For the number of them I use, I will just buy them on sale. Why take a chance?

Gone-CampingWell as one who has refilled a bunch of them I can say I ll never refill another unless they start making the refillable ones again. We averaged 4 out of 10 leakers on the first refill, and several others that would leak only after being bounced around in the PU on a trip.
The valve seals are make to be used one time only as can (and do) deform to the point of not sealing. For the few cents I saved refilling them wasn t worth the fear I felt opening up the PU and smelling it full of propane.
We also had a 30 pound " forklift"  wet draw tank and hose so we didn t have to balance a tank upside down so it would feed liquid propane into the smaller bottle.

 Gone-CampingNo thanks on the refilling.

Also, if the container says Do Not Refill or Nonrefillable, the manufacturer must have some reason for stating this.

When it comes to gas and saving money, I would rather spend the money and be safe.

I have had a couple of experiences where the gas cylinder valve got stuck when removing the cylinder from the gas cooker.  I had to rescrew it on and then back off to stop it from leaking.

Gone-CampingI have to agree with Gene.  I would rather spend a little more and have piece of mind than save and have a tragedy.

Gone-CampingThis week you can buy the 1# Coleman bottles, already safely filled, at Kmart for $ 1.79 each!

Gone-CampingAs far as legalities, state laws may vary, so it may or may not be illegal to refill them.

What is illegal everywhere is refilling them and transporting them.  Federal rules say you can t transport them after refilling them.

For my money, I ll buy a new one.

Now, who knows what to do with the empties?  I believe it is illegal to lanfill them.

Gone-CampingEmpties here go to a hazardous waste site. The first Sat of the month we can take them to the a location within the city and they dispose of them in a safe manner.
