Not that we ll be heading out West for a while, but I was wondering how legitimate this was.  Has anyone ever camped at a free campground?

whippetwrunI reviewed the Colorado ones, and you get what you pay for. My advice, look for National parks, and Forests. Even State parks.

There is only one in that list in the Mountains, It s a wide open spot, with no facilities.

whippetwrunif you send to the national forests in the area that you want to camp in they often have a few campgrounds that are free or very cheap.  The free locations are often dispersed camping where you pull off the road or campgrounds that have nothing more then outhouses.
They also have campgrounds that are very cheap $5-$7. We have stayed in some of them and have enjoyed ourselves. At that price you  may get a goodsized lot and some trees for shade as well as water and an outhouse.

whippetwrunWe got a recreational guide from the Department of Fish and Wildlife that has free and pay campgrounds listed.  Of course the free ones don t have hookups and some of them are nothing but a graveled parking lot in our opinion, but others aren t bad at all.  Also, check with the Forest Service office in the area you are thinking of, they have areas that are free (dry camping) or just take a nominal use fee.

whippetwrunThanks all for the info!  Hopefully we ll be heading out west in about two years when DD is a little older and can handle longer trips more quietly!
