We would like to see Graceland this summer.  Does anyone have anything on the campgrounds nearby?
 Thanks

kampknueI went to my search engine and keyed in " Memphis AND camping,"  and got several spots that came up.  I ve never camped there, but this should be something easy to find.  There may even be a state park nearby that would be cheap.

I was at Graceland in 1988.  It was amazing to me how many people stood at the gates and cried still.  It was impressive to see.

kampknueI have never camped in Memphis; but I remember reading a similar thread either on the old boards or somewhere else.  The response on that was something like:  do not stay in the KOA (I think) near Graceland.  I concur, as I would not want to be in that part of town after dark.  There is a KOA East (I think) that was reported to be ok, if you like KOA parking lots near interstates.  The best bet, although it s cross town from Graceland might be Shelby Forest State Park.  If you only plan to see Graceland you might even consider camping at Chickasaw State Park (an hour or so east of Memphis).  Really nice cg.  Memphis is a fun place to visit; don t limit yourself to only Graceland.

kampknueThere are reviews for campgrounds at Knoxville, Pikeville, Pigeon Forge, and Townsend here:  www.campg.com .

QuoteI would not want to be in that part of town after dark.

When we were there in 1988 we stayed at a nice hotel (unplanned detour due to hurricane slowing our progress to Alabama), but we did walk over to some fast food and thought the area looked kind of rough.  When we ate breakfast at a local cafe, they advised us to not be out at night if we could avoid it and watch our belonging when we were out and about.

So in light of this information, I think I d do a day visit, staying somewhere a little nicer than Memphis.  And be prepared -- Graceland isn t cheap!

 kampknueOdd.

We were at the KOA at Graceland three years ago...Maybe I m a little oblivious, but I didn t think the area was all that bad.   Course we were enroute;  we pulled in a little after noon, did graceland, had dinner (great ribs at a local place-Memphis, ribs--go figure!). got up, had breakfast and bailed.  On to the next destination, Keesler AFB.  (#1 DS graduation from tech school.)

I just thought it was a typical KOA.  But we weren t there long enough maybe to develop any kind of opinion.

And, yep.  It ain t cheap.  And people still cry.  At least they did three years ago.

kampknueNot to confuse anyone here.....there are many nice areas in Memphis.  Graceland is not in one of them.  Don t let that scare you into not visiting the city.

kampknueDon t know if you are a gambler or not, but... There are a couple of casino s in Tunica (Robinsonville) that have camping areas. It is located about 15 minutes from Memphis. From what I saw last year they seemed like ok spots. It would get you close to Graceland without being in the city.

kampknueIf you re a big Elvis fan, Graceland is worth seeing.  But if you re just lukewarm on Elvis go downtown instead and take in Beale Street on a Saturday night.  Graceland isn t a mansion by any stretch of the imagination.  Just a two story house on five acres surrounded by a middle class neighborhood on the sides and tourist traps across the road.

Downtown Memphis is a lovely place with tons of character.
