Just curious if any of you have to pay a fee for your child to participate in high school athletics.

Our school board is considering charging each athlete $30 for each sport that he/she participates in.

Personally, I am against it.  I figure I pay enough to buy dd her sports equipment, provide transportation (home and back from school but sometimes to and from events), helping with fund raising and helping with track meets.  Dw also does the same to help out.

GeneFGene,  what is the fee being applied to? Is it merely a registration fee, or is it in place of some of the fund raisers?

It is supposed to help pay part of the costs of the athletic program.  It does not eliminate any fund raisers

GeneFI thought we were already paying for the education system thru our taxes !!!! Same thing is happening here too ! Double dipping or what ! Drives me crazy !!!!!!

GeneFI guess I think all extra curricular activities should have the same type of fee, no matter if its sports or band or anything else. I don t think tax payers should fully pay for extra curricular activities, those that use the programs should help a bit too.  I ve seen many schools with higher fees for one sport and none for another activity.  I think a flat fee is fair.  I may regret that thought though as my kids grow up ;)

Acts 2:38 girl

GeneFA friend of mine heard on the radio that around here they are thinking about charging a small fee for transporting your child on the school bus to and from school !!![:@]   If you ask me, it sounds like just another way to start another goverment funding program for the school, because you know not everybody can afford to pay to have thier children brought to school, so lets start a program similar to the " free lunch" , and get more money there.  If this actually goes into effect, then parents should demand seatbelts in the bus, regulated mileage, and for these people to slow down.  The busses around here fly down our road, and we better hope none of our kids are riding thier bikes in the afternoon because those drivers want to get home fast.
Yikes, I ll step off the soapbox now! [;)] [&:]

Only $30???  In our system, it s $120! [:@] It s also $100 to be in the school band or the school chorus.  And even though they take in more than they spend, they are killing elementary band next year.[:@]

Taking the bus? That s $180/year.  More and more students are driving to school, so they re going to start selling parking stickers...I ll bet that will be over $100/year.  Trash collection is $180/year.

AustinBostonAs a high school teacher, I can tell you that the only athletic program that nearly supports itself is football with gate fees at the JV and varsity games.  Otherwise, all the other activities constitute a large drain on our resources.

For a typical basketball game, we have to pay at least one off duty sheriff officer ($90), 2 refs per game (total=$200), 4-6 teachers depending on level (2 guards; 1 scoreboard; 1 announcer. 1 tickets @$14/hr each), one administrator (who knows how much they cost), 1 athletic trainer, 2 custodial.  This doesn t include wear and tear items like having the gym floor refinished, waterlines, and the like.  It also doesn t include our electric or gas bills which, by the way, run about $10000 per summer month (6-8 months a year).  In my district, we try to completely fund all of this money without passing it on to the parents (except gate fees).

However, due to the state s budget problems we may lose $2 million in funding next year.  Since our district tries to funnel money towards the classroom and not lose teachers (which can t be said of all AZ districts; 2 districts layed off over 100 teachers each), I can foresee a time where it will be pay to play at the Junior Varisty and varsity levels.

GeneFyikes! remind me not to move! we pay $25 for track, i imagine fb and bb are higher, but ds isn`t in them so i can`t say for sure. what gripes me is drivers ed, costing an extra $50. figure that  x`s 30 kids, crikey!!!! how much do they need? band only charges an extra $7 for a cleaning fee for the uniform, that `s understandable. we get off pretty good here, except, we live on the very furthest outskirts of the district, so we drive 10 miles each way. figure that - on mondays as an example, pick him up at 4:15 from track practice at the school, drive back 15 miles to voice lessons, drive back 15 miles to school for chorus musical practice, 10 miles back home, thank the LORD he catches a ride home after that. whew! now, that`s where my $$$$$$$ goes [&:]

 Is this a school expense?

GeneFOur district has not charged any fees yet for these types of activities, but I can see it coming.  I guess it s a " where do you draw the line"  thing too.  I mean, part of education is to create a  well rounded individual, and extra curricular activities and things like music and art contribute to that.

Only if the politicians are involved. [:@]  They had a choice of either start charging for trash collection, or lay off teachers.

Of course, when it comes to politicians offering choices, you either get neither, or you get both.  They have instituted the fees, now they are going to lay off teachers anyway.[:@]

Consider yourself lucky on the drivers ed.  We had to pay $350.

Drivers ed use to be in the curriculum here but then it was dropped and a private driver ed company came in.  They taught after school but would do some of the driving when kids had study halls.
