Well, it s time for my home state; Vermont! Land of Cabot Cheddar, VT Maple Syrup, and taxes!

 Favorite Campgrounds:
Ricker Pond State Park, Groton, VT. No hookups. Quiet. Small CG on 100 acre pond. Loons. We like it because it s close, 30 minutes, quiet and well run. Privacy is good. No planned activities at the CG, although the nature center 5 miles up the road has daily planned activities from hikes to Raptor shows put on by VT Institute of natural Science.

Brighton State Park, near Island Pond, VT. No hookups. Quiet. Loons. Nice paddling in area. Same as above.

garym053We ve only been to 4 campgrounds in VT, but want to go to many more. We went to White River campground in Gaysville last Columbus Day and had a great time. It s real " woods"  camping, but with hookups, which you can t see because the lines are all run in the trees!

We were told July is  a great time to go there. The run off makes for some awesome tubing in the river. We found great fire roads to bike and these really HUGE rabbits that wander the campground.

Here s the link to the campground:

garym053Lake Carmi is a great family campground.  It s in the north western part of the state, very close to the Canadian border.  But what I like about it is the close distance to the Missiquoi National Wildlife Refuge area, great place to canoe or kayak.  Plus the old RR bed has been turned into a wonderful paved bike path!  I m told it runs from St. Albans to Richford!  We ll find out on the July 4th weekend!
And on a personal note, it s close to where we lived for thirteen great years, so we get to visit with old friends! [:)]

garym053We re looking for a nice campground in VT for later this summer (late July or early Aug).  Needs to be near bike paths and offer calm water (canoe/paddleboat) activities.

DS wants Electric hookup, DW wants clean bath/shower rooms.

Any suggestions?  I liked Lake Carmi, but it had no hookups.

 Thanks,

garym053Hi George! Hopefully someone else will answer, as we like state parks (= no hook-ups) better than " planned til you puke"  activities! (Sorry, I m cynical, one of my friends, a State Cop, was killed last week). Anyway, if no one offers any suggestions I probably can, but would be better from someone who enjoyed that type of camping! What part of Vermont are you looking at visiting?

George

garym053First... sorry about your friend... understand the cynical nature resulting from something like that.

We re still looking and debating upstate NY and VT.  We re not into the heavily planned stuff, but... well DS would like to be able to bring PS2 along (holding puke bag out for your use... I know I know - but family " negotiations"  are tricky sometimes).  I m also not sure how long the one battery on the taos would keep for a week-long trip - we want to try the dry camping as a weekend first.

Are those the only choices up there?  Resort-type or State park with no hookups?

garym053Gary, Just wanted to say that I m sorry to hear about your friend.  Family, friends and time spent together will help to see you through this time.
Hope to meet you and Mary in August, share an cold drink and talk about kayaking![:)]
