We have reservations at a beach near Santa Cruz CG in July. We are driving from Phoenix on I10-I5 then 101. We will be leaving @ 6:00am driving for about 8-9 hours. Need an overnight CG above the LA area. Does anyone have any suggestions. Only thing I would like would be restrooms and showers. Don t really need one with all the amentities because it is just for one night stopover. Thanks in advance for your help. I have been searching through the maps and sometimes I think I am going planning crazy. Thanks again.

maromeoIt depends on where you want to stay.  LA is a " HUGE"  area.

Our church has stayed at this RV park in San Dimas which on your map is right where the 10 fwy, 210 fwy and the 57 fwy all come together.  It is a nice park but again it is an RV park.  It has some nice grassy spots and they have full hookups and there is a small lake too.   If you have kids it is right next to Raging Waters water park.  It is a lot of fun and a nice place to play in July.  It is called East Shores RV park.  They are listed in the Trailer Life campground book.

If you want to go a little further north on the 5 fwy, there is Valencia RV park.  I believe there is a post about it on this " west"  site.  You could stay there and then cut across the Hwy 126 to the 101 and head north.

maromeoJust north of LA is Malibu Beach RV park, where some of us stayed recently.  Being from Arizona, your family would probably enjoy this park for the view of the ocean alone.   I know my niece and nephew from Phoenix always want to go to the beach when they re here visiting.

In Santa Paula (look inland from Ventura, along the 101) there s a place called Far West Resorts.  I haven t been there, but it looks very promising and another poster whom I won t mention, but whose initials are OLD MOOSE [;)], said it s a nice place.  It s a private campground so it s a little more pricey than some, but at least you can get in there, unlike most state parks right now.

If you want to go as far as the Pismo Beach area, there s Pismo Sands RV Park.  A little south of there is Lake Cachuma.

Most of these places should be able to be found on the web.  Good luck.  Wave as you re passing through, and look around for the Pop-uP Times stickers on our trailers [:)].

 maromeoTrina,
Thank you so much I definitely will check into these campgrounds. We will be on our way up to Sunset Beach for a couples of days and want a stop over spot outside of LA if possible. I had a bugger[;)] of a time getting reservations along the ocean for a couple of days in July. It took me 3 frustrating days to get through. I appreciate the information. Thanks again. Take care.

maromeoThere is a Monterey County Park 3/4 of the way up, in King City.Has trees, and is near a river, but I imagine that it can get very hot there during the Summer. You may also want to check out San Luis Obispo County Parks on the web.I know that there are a couple of lakeside campgrounds in both SLO & Monterey Counties. Most,     if not all, have restrooms and showers. What campground are you staying at,in Santa Cruz ? We live nearby.  Be sure to check out Henry Cowell Redwoods State Park,and/or Big Basin State Park while you are in the area.Hope this helps.

 maromeoForestwalker,
We are staying on Sunset Beach. It was the only available beach campground we could get in July after 3 days of trying to make reservations. [:@]. I hope it will be a nice spot for us. We are only there for 2 nights. We are taking one extra day to drive over.  It would be a 12-13 hour day if we drove it straight through. I wanted to break it up for DH. We will have to check out the other parks when in the area. We will let you know.
 Thanks again for the help.

maromeoMaromeo:Sunset is a nice park-We are suprised that you were able to get a space there for that time of the year. You are very lucky. The drive to Santa Cruz from Southern LA County probably wouldnt take more than 10 1/2 hours-but you are absolutely right-It would be wise to split the driving time in two with a stay over at a campground. Those that I mentioned are probably 8-9 hours out of LA.Lake Cachuma is probably closer to the half way point. We stopped there on a recent trip-it looked a little crowded to us-but for one night....  I would definately suggest that you stick to Highway 101 on your trip north. The Central Valleys that Highway 5 goes through often get very hot(105 +) in July.Happy trails.

 maromeoForestwalker,
Thanks for the info. Our objective is to get out of the heat which is already amoung us today it is to be 107. DH want to go to the beach so bad to get away. We are having an A/C unit put in the PU so we will have that to use along the way.
 Thanks again,

maromeoI might actually consider taking 10 to 215 north (San Bernardino) to 15 north to 138 west, then 14 north to 58 west.  This would take you along the north side of the San Gabriels through lancaster, Mojave and then up to Tehachapi.  There are a number of campgrounds in the Tehachapi area.  The next day, just follw 58 down to Bakersfield, up 99 to 46west and then 101 north to your destination.  This route has less traffic, lots of scenery, and avoids the LA basin.

 Just a thought.

maromeoThank you so much for all the information. I plan to sit down today and map out the trip and make the final reservation. I will let you know which one we go to. We are getting so excited about the upcoming trip. Our PU is at the dealer having the A/C installed and some warranty work done so we should get it back within the next week. I then get to repack. I have everything already cleaned and stacked in the extra bedroom [:)]. Now I can use the A/C when I am packing the inside and stay cool[8D]. Thanks again for all the info.

maromeoWe booked with Far West Resorts. Although Malibu Beach RV park seemed nice. It would be $58 a night for the overnight stay. It is peak season. Far West is more on our way and only cost $20.70 per night with hookups with my Good Sam Discount. It is one of the few times I have used it! Thanks for all the help. I will let you all know how it goes.
