RE: How do you find New Campsites?

After being given a rather hard time by a DEM worker at a Mass. State Campground when I asked to drive in to look at sites, even after offering to pay the day use fee for my wife and I, I wanted to know how others found the " perfect" site at campgrounds they ve never stayed at before!

I m with tlhdoc on this. We use several of the methods listed, but you only allow us to choose one. There is a check box that allows multiple selections. I don t know if you can do it now, but I d appreciate it if you could check it.[/i]

Thanks for fixing it.

We are usually camping far enough away so that a drive-through is not possible until we arrive at a campground. If we have not made a site-specific reservation, we will then drive thru and make a selection.

garym053I have called state and national Parks and asked park staff about camp sites, before making a site specific reservation.

garym053I check them any which way I can, and if I can t sometimes I just take the shot in the dark and go there anyway!!! While I do find myself utilizing certain campgrounds over and over again, my real preferrence is for trying new places. I personally like National or State Parks, but since the Feds won t upgrade their parks for Water & electric, I ve been leaning more toward state parks as they seem more eager to keep up with current trends and customer needs... Except Mass SP s (I had a bad experience with DEM worker too)....

garym053Since we like to dry camp at more remote sites, I usually look at FS or BLM directories. I also look at recreational maps printed for different parts of the state because those also include state campgrounds that I don t find anywhere else. When we travel around the Montana, Wyoming and Idaho on business trips we often stop to look at campgrounds that we see, just to check them out for future use!

garym053We generally like to drive through a park, just to see it, but also to check out their bathrooms. Neither of us like bad bathrooms!

garym053I also get books from the states that I wish to visit. If I am close enough to the campgrounds that I have circled I go the extra mile to check them out. I have only stayed at one bad Campground and that was in Ohio.( what I mean by this is that I have seen others and ruled them out before arriving) The ad said the best campground in Ohio, what a mistake. I will look the next time before I pay and pop-up at any campground.
