I had an oil level indicator on a Renault 18i. The indicator was a guage and was only to be read after turning the key on but before starting the engine. This gave an accurate and repeatable oil level indication.

I work at an auto parts store and a customer receintly came in with a small motor home. It had a sensor installed in the transmission dipstick tube so that you wouldn t have to remove the dog house to check the fluid. If the fluid was low a light would come on. As far as he knew it was installed by the company that put the body on the chassis.
