AustinBostonI do remember when!  I remember driving from Texas to NYC when the Pennsylvania Turnpike was the only 4-lane highway on the whole trip, and it was mostly potholes even back then (1950 s).  Yeah, we have come a long way.

I used to stop often and ask directions.  But where do you stop now?  Most " gas stations"  are not places where you " Trust your car to the man who wears the star," (an old, oooold Texaco slogan) but quick stop type places owned by a family from India and manned by some person behind bullet proof glass who has no idea where he is and only knows how to get to his apartment which may be 35 miles away.   When asked how to get to Tomball (a small town I guess would be considered a part of the Houston Metroplex) you will probably receive a blank stare and maybe an " I dunno"  grunt, if that much!

I usually carefully map out my trip, print out an itinerary so DW can tell me when and where to make the next turn.  Problem is, and I m not joking, she is always asleep when the exit signs start popping up and I m already past the one I should have taken by the time I can get her awake and she can find the itinerary I typed up.

I definitely need a navigational system  (because getting a new DW is out of the question)!

AustinBostonAh, but those old-style U.S. road signs were better than the road signs (what roads signs?) in Costa Rica.

We met a lot of very nice people when we stopped to ask for directions, though.
