Acts 2:38 girl

I know this is waaaaay off topic, but this is the Campfire Forum and I d share this around a campfire! [:)]  Just saw on " 60 Minutes"  that there is a National registry that you register your phone numbers with (home or cell) and it helps prevent telemarketers from calling you.  Nothing is fool-proof, but if it keeps one of them from calling me - I m all for it!!  Here s the website for anyone who s interested :

Acts 2:38 girlI signed up for the State Of Maine Do Not Call registry about a year ago and rarely get any calls. I did still sign up for the National one several weeks ago also. The Mass one is here

Acts 2:38 girlI signed up for the one in PA, but I am going to do the national one too.  Does anyone get calls on their cell phones?  I never thought about them.

Acts 2:38 girlWe ve had a State " do not call"  registry in NYS for about 3 years. Since the Attorney General started giving out $10,000 fines per violation we get few calls. Even people who are exempt from the regulation like businesses you actually fo business with like cable companies and banks are very cautious in calling.

The national registry is said to be stronger than our state one and telemarketers are sueing everyone in sight and pouring lobby money into Washington like gravy on dry turkey. NYS was even nice enough to us to submitt it s registry list to the national database so we don t ahve to sign up again.

I feel a bit sorry for the individuals that will lose their jobs over this, but then again I felt bad when I learned how buggy whip & horse carraige manufacturers lose jobs back when the auto took over.  Progress is chance and you ve got to change along with it.

Acts 2:38 girlThanks for the info, I hate getting those kinds of calls and this will hopefully help!!

Acts 2:38 girlThe national do not call registry won t actually be operational til sometime in October, but it s good to go ahead and get your number listed as soon as possible.  Even tho we aren t yet getting soliciters calls on our cell phones, I registered ours anyway, as I figure they will try anything once this takes effect.   It s about time that someone did something about this problem.   One day when I was away from home I returned to fined 27 calls on my caller ID, and only a few messages.  The messages were from family members and friends, all the others said " Out Of Area"  which means telemarketers.   I sometimes answer the ones that say Private Caller, my sister works for a Drs. office and that is the designation they use, also my own physician, but lately I have answered some of these and they turn out to be trying to sell me windows, siding or apply for a credit card.   So they know that they need to change their tactics to get to us.      I tell them, " When I need milk, I go to the grocery store and get some, I don t wait for the store to call me and try to sell it to me, and I feel the same way about windows, siding and credit cards.  When I need them, I ll call you, Don t call me" .   These people are getting way too invasive, and something needs to be done to stop them.

Acts 2:38 girlI ve sign up for it too but right now I have Privicy Manager. When ever someone calls that shows (out of area, private) a recording comes on. If they want to talk to me you have to record your name and then it rings to my house and then I decide if I want to talk. The only problem I encountered is that I do daycare and some parents work for companies  that show " out of area"  on my caller ID. So it takes awhile to talk to me. So now I put in access codes. They are the area code and telephone number to people who I know so when they call they put in the access code and get to me right away. Sometimes when I forgot to put on privicy manager.....oh, my gosh.....the calls you would get.....I hated it......now when my phone rings its from someone we know.

Acts 2:38 girlI already signed up but it won t keep people from calling you that already have a business relationship with you.....like, say, your insurance agent, magazines you subscribe to, newspapers, car dealer, etc., under certain conditions.  I guess the trash cans at the PO will soon get larger.[>:]  Oh, I am going to love anyone who calls me that shouldn t.....there are stiff fines for that....gonna get me a new camper out of that.[8D][8D][8D][8D][;)][;)][;)]

The telemarketers can just transfer over to junk mail envelope stuffers.

In both the NYS registry and the new federal one, you don t get the fines. I asked because three of the companies I reported got fined and I thought like you, I ll at least get part of it, depending on how many reported them. No such luck.[&:]

Acts 2:38 girlVerizon (my phone company) offers a Call Intercept feature for $5/month. It sounds like the Privacy Manager that Foxyladies mentioned. Unidentified calls are blocked. The caller gets a message saying " this number doesn t accept unidentified callers" . They can record their name and the system calls you and you can listen to the recording. Once you hear the recording you can accept the call, refuse the call, refuse the call and have the system play the sales refusal message (" Take me off your list" ), or send the call to voice mail (if you have voice mail). You can also set up a private 4-digit code that you can give friends and family. If they re calling from a phone that shows up as unidentified (sometimes cell phone IDs don t show up, for example), they can punch in the code as soon as the refusal message starts. That puts them straight through without having to record their name. You hear a special 3-ring signal when an intercepted call is coming through.

Of course, any telemarketers calling from a phone that is identified will still get through but those are few and far between. I ve had Call Intercept for over two years now, and I average about one telemarketing call a month--or less! The $5 a month is a bargain as far as I m concerned!

Acts 2:38 girlI registered on the do not call list, but I still have a Tele-Zapper.  It emits a tone when you answer your phone that the computer generated phone calls think is an invalid number.  The number of calls I receive after having that on for one month decreased from about 3-4 calls A DAY to 3-4 calls a MONTH!  You can supposedly computer generate the tone and put it on your answering machine and screen your calls, but that was way too much work for me!
