I ve just saved myself over $150.  Both my boys have life threatening peanut allergies.  Because they will be going to daycare, they must carry their own epi pens.  Medic Alert sells child size hip carriers costing +/-$50 each, plus the cost to renew their membership, each, plus shipping and handling.  That s pushing $200. [link=http://www.medicalert.ca/english/member/vao/medical.html]This is what medic alert sells. [/link]

So, I ve been on the look-out for a suitable alternative and I think I ve made it.  I got two plastic cylindrical tooth brush holders to house the pens.  The container supplied by the pharmacy isn t very rigid.  Then I purchased two small nylon pencil-case holders, just big enough to hold the tooth brush containers.

Next, I had to find an adjustable strap to attach to the pencil-cases to, I looked at several hip-pouches, but they were too big with too many pockets so I went to the camping section, nothing adjustable, then I went to the pet section and sure enough, the large nylon dog collars are just the right size and adjustable!  I just sewed two loops onto the back of the penci-cases and voila, I ve got home made epi-pen-hip-pouches, with room to carry their puffers!

The total cost: tooth brush holders $1.50, two small pencil-cases, $3.00, two large dog collars, $15.00, that s $19.50 (plust tax) for both, much better than the alternative!

fivegonefishingWOW Tammy that is a much better price.  It is amazing what they charge for a " specialty"  item.

tlhdocEvery corner you turn, someone is out there to make a fortune. They prey on people who can t get things done, or lack the creativity to do what Tammy did !

 Good go Tammy !

 fivegonefishingWow, thats a great idea!

I have puffers stashed everywhere so I can get one fast if I need it.  But when camping I usually just set it on the counter by the bed at night and invariably it gets knocked off.  So I have a bed caddy with pockets for cell phone, tv remote, puffer, reading glasses.  It attaches to the bunk end under the mattress with velcro and hangs where I can just reach my hand down and grab what I need.  I saw some at Bed Bath and Beyond with tab tops and thought that might be a good thing to hang from the shepherd s hook as well.

 fivegonefishingBrilliant!

I too had to make one for us to carry my daughters EPI PEN and Benedryl as well as her puffers - I use the hip pouch and so far it has worked great.  I used fabric paint in a glow in the dark vibrant orange that say s " EPI-PACK"

I love your idea too!  Very clever!

In our state, the school and/or daycare has to have an EPI-PEN with your childs name on the perscrition in their lock box - not sure if it s the same for you.  Also, HANG on to the EPI-PENS a recent study it was concluded that these pens are good 90 MONTHS after they expire!!  If the liquid has turned brown - you know it s no longer good.
My daughter is starting Kindergarten this year - my anxieties about the school handling this right are ever present.  I get to meet with her teacher tomorrow (the day before school starts here) and discuss safety measures.

Good luck with your little ones in daycare!  With you looking out for them in such a thoughtful and creative way - they are off to a great start!!
