farmerWe also went thru this with our farm (century also). My brother ran it since mid60 s.
 Now he has retired.

farmerWe hope that your father enjoys his retirement, and we wish you good luck securing the job that you need.It s good that someone in the family will continue to farm(I know how much it means to people who have spent all,or most,of their lives farming to still be able to connect with the land and lifestyle).

farmerFrom one who grew up on a farm, I give you my best for making a tough decision to move on. Farming is incredibly hard work and it is year round work.  It means fighting the " elements of weather"  everyday and sometimes it means failure (crops, equipment, etc.)  When grandpa died, farming came to an end for my family on land dating back to the Land Grants.  Most of the land remains in the family, though.  Good luck to your father on his retirement.[:)]

 farmerFolks
Thanks for the kind words of support.  We sent the first load of 40 cows on Sunday and it was a bittersweet day.  Nice to know we will be done losing money every day but sad to send animals that we have raised since birth, along with their mothers and daughters, to slaughter.  Now we are just waiting for the call from the packing house to tell us when the next truck is scheduled to arrive.

 farmerWow.
It is a shame it is so difficult to make a living these days in something that is so central to our heritage - something so many of us city folk can only dream about. Best of luck to you and your family as you settle into the next chapter of your lives - I hope you find work that you really enjoy.
