1.) Eggcrate
2.) Mattress
3.) Survival blanket
4.) Eggcrate
5.) Coleman 20-degree sleeping bag
6.) Flannel bottom sheet
7.) Flannel top sheet
8.) Blanket
9.) Down comforter

Now that I think about it, no wonder I was so hot. The temps only got into the mid-40s at worst. No way I could handle living in the midwest!

You are so right about not being able to handle living in the midwest!!!  I'm hot just reading this!

I went out in mid-September ... in a tent. Night-time lows around 40 degrees.  This was my set up ...

1.) Coleman 20-degree sleeping bag.

I was fine.  LOL

btw ~ went with the kids in early October ~ night-time lows between 35 and 40.  I put an electric blanket (set real low) between the flannel fitted sheet and the girls' sleeping bags (mine included) ~ I was hot then, too!

It looks as if you are padding the mattress for more comfort & softness  as well as trying to ward off the cool nights.  If I may, I'd like to make some suggestions that may make your set-up easier & more effective.

1.) Eggcrate replace with one, maybe 2 layers of Reflectix http://www.reflectixinc.com
2.) Mattress
3.) Survival blanket  eliminate because of #1 change
4.) Eggcrate  switch order with #5, & top w/mattress pad --regular or heated w/dual controls
5.) Coleman 20-degree sleeping bag  switch order w/#4, & replace with a self-inflating mattress
6.) Flannel bottom sheet
7.) Flannel top sheet
8.) Blanket
9.) Down comforter nix; use sleeping bag instead

I love the idea of layering because you can add or remove layers as the temps fluctuate.  Also, I love flannel sheets.  However, they just don't last very long.  I used to use them for my massage practice.  They didn't have the durability of higher thread count cotton sheets.  We use sheets of 310 or higher thread count on our bed....yes, I'm spoiled.  The higher the thread count, the softer & more durable the sheets tend to be.

BTW, you can find really good deals on self-inflating mattresses on http://www.sportsmensguide.com.  And, be sure to use http://www.naughtycodes.com for online coupons.

I keep 2 of the blankets in my car for the winter.  I travel 30 miles one way going to work and I have to go no matter what the weather conditions are. :(
