I just repainted the paneling in our kitchen.  To bad the wallpaper is not that pretty because it's in great condition.  It has a lot of dark yellow, white, tan, brown, and orange.  The paneling was dark brown and I didn't sand or prime it.  I highly recommend it though.  Mine was just a "quick fix"  because I know we'll be doing it over this summer.  There was only two walls to paint, the others are covered by cabinets and that brick overlay, real brick stuck on the walls!  What a job that will be!  Good-luck!  Lighter paint makes all the difference, it just feels happier in there!

when my brother moved into his "new" to him home it had all very dark paneling in the living room of all places.  It was very gloomy.  Plus the previous owner was a smoker so we needed to get the odor out.  We all pitched in and washed the paneling down with TSP and water mixture.  The nicotine coming off that paneling was GROSS!!  But the paneling was squeaky clean after that.  We also used a hand sander and mildly went over the paneling and wiped it down one more time.  Then we used the Kilz primer, two coats and finally two coats of white paint.  Wow did that place cheer up in no time with clean walls, new furniture and nice window treatments.  He has a great living room now!!
