Our dog is now 14. We gt her out of the newspaper. The family had gotten divorced and the apt the mom and kids was moving into would not accept dogs.  Cookie was about 2.  Jeffrey was about 2. Cookie had been chained up because the yard could not be fenced (don't ya just love deed restrictions). Our home is in a old neighborhood and we had a "pen" fenced in for Jeffrey. We enlarged the pen to fence in the whole yard (not only kept the dog in but kept the neighborhood hoodlums out). Cookie thrived and never moped around a bit.

Last spring, the crazy lady (you know the one that every neighborhood has, should not have the house because he/she cannot really take care of it" was given a kitten. Humane Society had taken away a whole houseful of animals and health dept condemed the house until it was cleaned up). She gave the kitten to Jeffrey as it was living in her car because she was forbidden to move another animal into her house (she couold not really are for them). We kept Katie, part siamese, siamese temperment to boot. Then a gray tabby who was pregnant and dropped off, made herself at home in our yard, My middle son gave her a can of tuna (not the at food, but solid white) and she would not leave, so we kept feeding her,  She had 3 kittens and is now in the house.  The kittens were kept in the wood pile beside the shed and did not get human attention. Lat year it was to be 7 degrees one night and Raymond and I got them inside to eat, Katie and I kept their attention while Raymond went outside the front door, around the house and shut the back door. They found out that they are warm safe and dry. They still want out side, but they like to be inside and will let us pet them. And even pick them up from time to time.
