 Hi All,

Another location I was at during the past weeks was Fair Haven State Park in New York State, located on Lake Ontario. They have a beautiful beach and camp grounds. This is a worth while place to camp. They have fishing, boat rental, swimming at the beach and the park is as green as green can be. Plenty of bike riding areas. Lots of open area. Here is the link on the web  http://nysparks.state.ny.us/parks/  .  Pets are welcome. More to come....

whitestar505This park is down the road from me. It s a very busy park, you need reservations for an electric site, and they are on the small side. The non electric sites are a little bigger, but there are many that are on sloping hills, or down drives, etc. The facilities at this park are indeed nice, but I feel the sites rate a 4 out of a 1-10. Out of all the NYS parks I have been to this is my least favorite.

 marinmarin,

Sorry that I rated your SP to high for you. But living down here with the masses it is very nice. The beach was not crowed at all like here. I did not see busy at all there at the park. The need for reservations is something I have to do every time I go camping here. I have found that the upstate NY people have this idea that ten people is a crowd. This is even so with their driving at there busy times of the day. To me, from being down here around the Baltimore area it is nice not to be so crowded all the time. So with that thought in mind, don t short change your state park, and  in my opinion your SP was very nice. Yes, I agree with you about other NY SP s being nicer.

If I had known you were right down the street I would stopped by and said hello club member...

PS. Is it true " WE DID IT AT FAIR HAVEN"  ?[;)]

No problem here with you stating your opinion at all. Hope you have a good day.

For what it's worth, I grew up in NYC and left to attend college in the very northern reaches of NY (Potsdam). I graduated from college 30 years ago and living near ithaca, ny (about 230 miles northwest of NYC) places me the furthest south I've lived in three decades and the closest I've lived to a major american city in 30 years, so i guess i can appreciate both positions here. After 30 years "upstate", including 15 years in the "north country", i guess i'd have to admit to being an "upstater" now.

For the record, i worked at Fair Haven Beach State Park in the summer of 1974; i ran a pilot project in migrant children outdoor education. I taught (science) in the local school district there (red creek central schools). First, the park has changed substantially over the years. Having pop-up camped there these past two seasons, i can tell you there are tons more people in the park than there used to me. Of course, there have been renovations made, like new parking lots, bathouses and re-furbished beach, etc, that probably make it seem "perfect" to folks from major cities where the beach real estate available per person is counted in square inches, not square yards.

But Fair Haven is the local "playground" for folks from Rochester, a city of about 300,000 and Syracuse (about 275,000) is just 45 miles to the south. The "Renaissance Faire" and elizabethan "playground" is located in Sterling, about a 10-15 minute drive from the park, so a beach-renaissance faire jaunt" isn't inconceiveable for folks within striking distance of the park.

The facilities are "alright" and i would agree that the water and electric sites are on the small side compared to other parks. The park, though always popular, is beginning to suffer from the explosion of the middle class population, with their boats, suv's, pop ups and trailers. You would need to plan, carefully plan a time at Fair Haven. Spots are gone weeks, if not months in advance. Getting in the park to use the facilities is much less of a problem, so if you wanted to use the park, but not camp there, there are nice campgrounds in the area.
