This isn't a recipe but it is a question on cooking, specifically Dutch Oven cooking!
On average, how long should charcoal briquets last? I've read numerous articles on the number of Briquets and starting them 15 to 30 minutes before cooking, etc. BUT no where have I seen any suggestions on how far into the recipe to start more briquets to replace the first batch! I'm sure it probably depends on the brand, so let's say quality briquets like Kingsford!
Any ideas how long I can expect them to last? Will I usually need to rplenish them for a recipe that takes 60 minutes in the DO?
Thanks for any help! I'm a newbie at DO cooking! (Obviously!!!)

That's because it depends.

The biggest factor is wind, but humidity and altitude have an effect on how fast the coals will burn.

Under the worst conditions (except rain), you should be able to rely on at least 40 minutes cooking time.  Under ideal conditions, you might get up to an hour.

If the food's not mostly done when the coals are down to about the size of a nickle, then we start more then.

Thanks Austin! You answered my question better than I asked it!!! Finding out when to start new charcoal based on the size of the coals and whether or not the dish is done seems to be great advise!
Thank you!
