Serious question here

I'm probably going camping this weekend all depending on a timely fix of the pu.  I have my new sea kayak and I will be kayaking both Sunday and Monday for 3-4 hours each day.  My dog loves to go camping, I love taking my dog camping.  The weather is supposed to be 80 degrees at the lake this weekend.  How possible will it be for me to bring my dog with me if she will have to be left by herself for 3-4 hours a day each day?  I thought of putting her in the Pathfinder with the windows down, her dog bed and some water.  I thougt of leaving her in the pu with water but I don't want her trying to get out for some reason and wrecking something.  I can't just leave her chained up by herself outside at the cg, plus I don't know the rules about dogs at cg's.  So what can I do?  If I have to leave her home I will, but I don't want to :(

I guess it really depends on the dog.  We usually take our smallest with us.  The first time we left him alone, we actually locked up, started the TV and left to another site down the road, we came back and just listened.  He ended up being well behaved and we did leave him for about 1 - 1 1/2hrs.  This was unusual for him, as if we leave him out of the kitcen at home when no one in home, he tears something up (separation problem, because he doesn't do anything if someone is home with him).

I would not recommend leaving him in the Pathfinder.

I would suggest calling the CG to see what their rules are about leaving a dog chained up.  Locally, as long as they are not noisy, there is no problem.

First of all, leaving her in the Pathfinder is probably out.  Even with the windows all down, an 80

Whitney our yellow lab(4yrs) is crate trained, so when we go camping. she gets to stay in the camper by herself with-out the crate. I leave the TV or radio on low.
I put up all the bread, chips and snack food. She likes to eat too.
She gets her blanket from the carte on the put down table and she is fine. We are usually only gone up to 2 hours at a time. We checked her out the first time and I was able to walk into the camper with her sleeping. I scared her first time. It was funny but she was POed with me about it.. Our little dog stays in his crate when-ever we are away from camper during the day. Pool, lake etc.
I think getting them crate trained was the best for both. The little one will go to his crate to get away, if we have company over & if the kids get on his nerves..
Whitney spends her days laying on the back deck inside her 50X70 lot. Unless she is on my bed with me.
She likes to camp as does the little one. Who's name is Houston(1-1/2yrs).

I think you can do some type of arrangments with her sleeping in the camper while you kayak..with AC on.

Another option would be to find a kennel nearby to where you are camping/kayaking and see if they will do a 1/2 day or whatever daycare while you are out on the water.  That's what I would do with my akitas, or I'd leave them at home.

well I'm going to leave her at my parents house for the weekend.  They have a little Jack Russell that'll keep her company.  I'll just have to plan on doing that during lake trips and take her with me during mountain trips.

I think that is the best way to know she will be OK.

I was thinking maybe you could strap the dog to the kayak ?? Do you have those bungee cords on the decks?? Maybe throw a leash and have the dog pull you??  Figured I would throw a few more options out there for you.  ;)

I had the same thoughts.. I've seen a life vest for dogs before.

Dogs are supposed to be great swimmers ! For a little ones, I don't know though, waves in the water might overcome them.
