The government recently started to proces a bill which would give the students graduating from religoius schools equal rights at university entrance exams.

These high school equivalents are not normal high schools, and concentrate on educating students mostly on religious matters to enable them to work at Mosques as Imam's etc. They do not get the full training a normal high school student does. Thus, at the entrance exams their points are heavy on the areas they are educated on (scoring them higher on areas they need to concentrate on) , but not so heavy on the rest. A normal high school student has more weigth given to math/science etc.

The religious background government is passing a bill which would make the university entrances exams to give more weight to all the areas for these high school students enabling them (making it a lot easier) to go to other areas like engineering science etc. The issue is, if they want to have non-religious profession they can always go to a normal school (which is a lot more difficult).

The secular structure of the country strictly differentiates between religous training/activites etc. But the not so secular government is doing its utmost best to make the lines disappear as fast as they can.

The armed forces (Office of chief of staff, all four forces, air/land/sea/one more I don't know how to explain "Jandarma") (ok, this is tough to  explain you gotta know the culture,  whose responsibility is to protect the country from internal and external enemies ) issued a declaration that the latest bill is against the fabric of the nations basic structure.

This is more or less equivalent to saying, try a few more of these and you will see the tanks rolling down pretty fast towards the senate.

I believe Armed forces is the only thing between a Religiously fundamental Turkey and the current Secular Turkey right now. So if you see another coup, or see the government resign in a hurry, don't be surprised. Now you know the rest of the story :)

Did you ever wonder why I live in Canada ?    :D

Getting worse ! The government said that they will not take the bill back as they represent the people ! Indeed it is a majority government but I do not believe most of Turkey want the secularity go down the drain.

Army's response : Take the warning seriously, we mean it, do not touch secularity .....

Will keep you posted for sure :) This is going to be good !

Yeah I know how undemocratic that army warns the government .... But it is the will of Ataturk (Who setup the modern country) that the army guards the country and he wanted a secular, modern Turkey. I do not want to go back to an iran or Iraq or Saudi Arabia like Turkey for a vacation if I ever do ....

Bill approved and sent to the head of state for approval and he is sure to reject it. But he can only veto it once, if the same bill is sent the same way to him again. The tension is very high because of this bill now ....
