This was one of the most beautiful campgrounds we have stayed at this past year.  For $19/night you get water and electricity - super clean bathrooms with hot showers - spacious shaded lots - washers and dryers (2 each) at each comfort station - extremely friendly volunteers - cable hook-ups.  The campground itself is hilly and the hike back to our site from the bathroom is being felt in the back of our legs today.  Several hiking trails lead out of the campground.  There are only 48 sites, very few are suitable for big rigs and most require a little manuevering to back into but, believe me, it is well worth the effort.  The park is patrolled frequently and the gates are locked at 10 PM.  They do except reservations but do not assign a site.  Tullulah Gorge is about 20 minutes away and we drove through their camground and, while nice, we liked this one much better.  Be aware, if you have children, we didn t see a play area but the kids who were there seemed to be having a great time.

We stayed there for the first time in September.  Loved it.  It's actually in Mountain City, north of Clayton.  Like you said, only 48 sites but it sits on a mountain top, more or less.  If you take the right fork to the visitors center, there is a playground.  There is also a fishing lake about 2 miles down the road from the campground.  Driving distance from Helen, Tulullah, Franklin and Cherokee,NC and the Chattooga River.
