This was posted on one of the Yahoo camping groups I belong to.  I thought I would share it here.

It could be useful to someone whom has disabled family members.

It is good to see something done for the handicapped. My husband is handicapped, but we usually don't take one of those sites unless it is the last one left. He gets around very well, unless his legs are bothering him. Here in California, most campgrounds have disabled sites. These sites are usually next to the bathroom(s) and seem to be more level. Some even have larger paved areas on the site for the wheelchair. One campground we went to, the picknick table didn't have a bench on one side so the wheelchair could easily fit at that side of the picknick table. It took us a while to figure out why there was only one bench to sit on, DUH (we forgot we were in a disabled site)! After we figured it out we thought it was a great idea.

We were just at Anastasia SP here in Fl last week.  They had 2 paved handicapped sites in the loop we were in .  Both righ next to the batroom and a bit wider than some.  Didn't notice if the tables were wheelchair tables or not.
The bathhouse was wheelchair accessable and had a roomy section with a roll in shower with a bench, a toilet and sink designed for wheelchair bound campers.

That reminds me... my uncle designed a picnic table that has a removable insert in the bench on one side.  You remove the one section and can sit it up on the table like a little shelf.  The wheelchair can then fit into the notched out area on that side of the table.  But there are still 2 sections for seating on that side so you don't loose all of your seating on one side.  Very ingenious design!

Here in Michigan, the parks are just beginning to realize the needs of the handicapped.  Some of the picnic tables have been extended on one end about 2 or 3 feet beyond the normal seating making it accesible to wheelchairs.  It still has the same seating on both sides.
