I always knew race fans and campers were some of the best people around!

Saw a story on Jayski.com (the NASCAR fan's "must-view" site) that Atlanta Motor Speedway is opening its campgrounds to Florida hurricane evacuees and allowing them to camp there for free. They're also opening the bathhouses so the campers can have hot showers.  Here's the story from Jayski:

"Atlanta Motor Speedway will open its campgrounds this weekend to evacuees of Hurricane Frances. The speedway, which is equipped to handles thousands of campers during its two annual NASCAR race weekends, will open its two largest gravel campgrounds to evacuees free of charge. AMS will also open its camper shower facilities, allowing evacuees free access to hot showers and restroom facilities. "It's just the thing to do," Atlanta Motor Speedway President Ed Clark said. "These are our neighbors, and they're in need. It's just the right thing to do." Already a million people in Florida have been ordered to leave their homes, and states of emergency have been declared in both Georgia and Florida. With Hurricane Frances' path projected to continue up the eastern seaboard, more evacuations are expected. With Atlanta area hotels already filling up, and state officials wondering where to put all of the hurricane evacuees, opening up the AMS campgrounds just seemed a natural, Clark said.
"We had all of this space, and it was going to go unused this weekend," Clark said. "It's the least we can do to open it up for someone who really needs it." Atlanta Motor Speedway is located approximately 25 miles south of Atlanta on Hwy 19/41 and approximately eight miles west of I-75. For more information, call the Atlanta Motor Speedway offices at (770) 707-7904 or visit //www.atlantamotorspeedway.com. Those interested in camping at Atlanta Motor Speedway should enter the speedway grounds at Entrance E off Hwy 19/41 or Entrance G off Richard Petty Boulevard and park in the large gravel lot located adjacent to these entrances. For on-site assistance or directions, visit the ticket office/gift store building.(AMS PR)(9-3-2004)"

Gone-Camping

Race fans and Race promoters are not that much different. If I had the facilities, I'd probably do the same thing. I'm curious if Homestead will do the same thing following the storm (providing they don't get slammed too)?
