Most of you know that Holly is in Anesthesia School to become a CRNA (nurse anesthetist). Next year, she will have to spend 8-10 weeks in Columbus, Ohio, for some clinicals at a children's hospital there. Columbus is about 400 miles from our home, a good distance for me, as I work 50-70 hours per week. However, a stroke of luck has helped me, as I will get 8.5 weeks of vacation next year (and next year only).

Since Holly rarely (if ever) frequents this board, I am looking for help for Columbus, Ohio, area campgrounds. I have already searched GLPUC site, as well as the CG review section here for Ohio. I plan on towing the camper up there and surprising her at least once.

She will be in Ohio from Mid February through Mid April. I am a little concerned about the temperatures, even in April, because it can still be cool here in Tennessee in April.

Any advice on good, cheap cg's (and maybe some not-so-cheap cg's), and the weather?

Larry,
The temperatures at that time will be cold & that time is when we get quite a bit of our snow, which is Feb & Mar.  April starts to warm up a bit to a high during the day in the 50's.  Last year my dw had a snow day in April, so we do occassionaly get some snow in April.
The only cg that I have stayed at in Columbus was Alum Creek.  It is a very nice SP and I have close friends that love camping there and they will drive each wknd from Cincinnnati to Columbus to stay at that cg.
I know this is not promising information but honesty is the best policy :).

Email wojo... he live in Grove City (just south of Columbus)... I'm sure he can direct you in the right direction... He may be able to go and scout our a few of the "private" CG's as our SP only allow 30day stay (I believe -- PopUpSgt will correct me if I'm wrong).

Oh, I won't be able to stay longer than a week at a time, so length of stay is no problem.

It also depends on what part of Columbus the hospital is located, I'm not sure where it's at, but wojo will definitely be able to direct you

I think it is a Children's Hospital, but not sure exactly which hospital. It is apparently a pretty big one, but not sure.

Childrens Hospital is near downtown 18th ave off of I-70. the closest KOA is near buckeye lake about 25-30 miles east of columbus, alum creek state park is about the same distance north (no sites with sewer and water) centally located water spigots and 1 dump station, some sites have electricity. delaware state park also north similiar features. 5 miles west of I-270 on Broad St (SR-40) is a little wide spot next to the road place called alton RV park. Very small appears to have full hookups always has about a dozen campers sitting there. no personal experience though. hope it helps

I would recommend Cross Creek Camping Resort.  It's open year round and has very nice facilities.  It's about 15 miles from Childrens Hospital (about 20 minutes).  It's located North of Columbus, I-71 to exit 131 (State Rt. 36-37), west on 36-37,  left on  N. Old State Rd., CG on Rt. just south of Cheshire Rd.  I don't believe you'll be disappointed.

GLPUC had a group campout at Cross Creek.  It's a nice clean facility, located on the north side of Columbus.

As mentioned previously, there are a couple state parks around Columbus to choose from as well.  Alum Creek SP is just around the bend from Cross Creek, and Delaware SP is just north of that.  About 1/2 hour south of Columbus is Deer Creek SP.  All of these would provide easy access to Children's Hospital.

My personal choice would be Deer Creek, as the traffic on the north end of town tends to be heavier than that on the south end.

Here are a couple links that might help you in your search.

Hope that helps.

Thank you to all for your help! The time is drawing near for Holly to leave me for 8 weeks. Let's hope it warms up quite a bit, and maybe I can drag the camper up there for a surprise. :yikes:
