Quote from: Popups4RentOk now, my small mind needs some information:confused: The http://www.airliftcompany.com site has an Astro kit for all steel spring models through 2004, how do you know if you have steel springs, or something else? Look for rust? They also have a kit for a mono-leaf suspension, is this the fiberglass? I have been considering purchasing a self leveling air kit after the last payment is made.

All this Spring talk got me searching, trying to help Kelly find the answers she needs....here is a copy/paste of the different type leaf springs I have found...

                  1.    Multi-Leaf Spring - This type of leaf spring has more than 1 leaf in its assembly. It consists of a center bolt that properly aligns the leaves and clips to resist its individual leaves from twisting and shifting.

                   2.    Mono Leaf Spring - Consists of one main leaf                   where the material

Kelly,
Not taking anything from your mechanic and his source but I do own a 2001 GMC Safari AWD, I have installed the Airlift Airspring system.  The only physical difference between the non-awd and the awd is the front end (with the exception of awd drivetrain).  On the AWD vehicle the front end has torsion bars and the non-awd has coil springs.

Oh well, I can tell you the shock mounts cannot support the weight that will be added to the tower, if you look under the vehicle you will see that the shock mount area is not reinforced for the added weight.

Quote from: KellyI emailed TruckSprings and they said "As long as your Astro Van does not have fiberglass leaf springs, the kit should work."  (According to the SuperSprings website ~ you can't use their product on the fiberglass leaf springs either).   I also talked to the guy who works on my van ~ I must have half the people I know trying to puzzle this out!

He called his source for all things underbody and was told that the only rear suspension application of this nature available for an AWD Astro is air shocks.  Near as we can figure out ~ the RWD model is made with the multi-leaf steel suspension and the AWD model is made with the fiberglass (composite).

Popups4Rent ~ you should be okay.  Near as I remember you have the RWD model.  Right?

Jeeeeeeeeez, Skip.  Do you have any idea how dirty and WET it gets under a car in Minnesota in February.  Damn magnet didn't stick to anything.  Remind me not to wear white next time I try that stunt!  LMAO

So, I'm back to the original plan.  Find a trailer, make sure all is level and the hitch heights match between TV and PU and IF I'm still sagging, then I'll probably have to go with the air shocks ...

Oh, and Lori?  I find if you just get rid of the stupid things and give in to the sag, life is much easier!  ;)  :)  :D  :p

Kelly,
I checked //www.astrosafari.com about this issue of the rear leaf springs.   According to the site GM changed to steel in 1996, but I'm not saying that they didn't slip a composite into the works.  Here is a direct statement from that website:
Look at the spring. If it's a single black plastic-looking leaf, it's fiberglass. If  it's  a stack of metal leaves - it's steel.

Maybe you could look under the van and determine whether you have 1 big plastic leaf or a stack of plates?

Food for thought

I am sure it is not husband specific, may be spouse though :p

Yes I have an old RWD 2000 with over 125K on it now, I don't think I can do much damage to it at this point in time. It has stacked springs, so I guess they are steel.

For a while in the mid 90's Dodge Dakotas had a composite frame.

Kelly - only you would wear white to get under the car - LOL

Actually, the more I thought about it, the more I realized I was wrong.  I DO know something about sag.  How I deal with it is to tighten my bra straps a bit more and give thanks that the good Lord blessed me with a husband with only one good eye.

Hope that helps. :D

Amen!  First thought that came to mind was get a new bra, or pull my hair tighter in a pony tail.  Maybe some butt bands would help, also ...  :D
