We are planning a camping trip to Maine's Mid Coast Region in the latter half of August 2005.  We have never camped in the area before.  We are leaning towards smaller campgrounds on the ocean and 5 have caught our eye:
1) Gray Homestead Oceanfront, Boothbay Harbor
2) Lobster Buoy Campsites, South Thomaston
3) Ocean View Park Campground, Phippsburg
4) Sagadahoc Bay Campground, Georgetown Island
5) Saltwater Farm Campground, Thomastown

I did a quick search of the northeast campground forum but didn't get any hits on the above mentioned.  Would appreciate comments from anyone who has stayed at or visited any of the above.  Thanks in advance!

Hi Ramblingwreck!
Are you into Dry Camping? The best campground ON the ocean near the Phippsburg area would be (IMHO) Hermit Island Campground near Small Point, ME. Lots (275) of great sites, on an island, (do yourself a favor and get one near FLUSH toilets!) This campground isn't for everyone, but we love it!
To be UPFRONT, we have never stayed at Ocean View Campground, (or most of the others you have listed) BUT we have driven by it. It is near one of the most beautiful beaches in Maine or anywhere for that matter, BUT it appears that the campers are so close together that you could lean out YOUR window and do S'mores on your neighbors campfire! Maybe these are the only ones we can see from the road, BUT I would check it out!
The beaches at Hermit Island probably don't compare to Popham Beach BUT with 5 or  6 to choose from- you may "own" one for a while!
Good Luck!

I probably live within a hour or so from all of those campgrounds but I had never heard of them. I tend to camp more inland and away from the busier areas. The ones that had web pages looked real nice and I'm sure you can't go wrong with any of them. I am going to Camden Hills State Park for Mem weekend but they don't have any hookups. Have to go there to make sure we have a CG with cell coverage, DW is on call.

The Boothbay Harbor area is real nice and you will not be to far from Rt 1 which can take you to Thomaston, Rockland and Camden which are all nice areas as well.

I guess one of the must stop places is the woodshop at the old Thomaston State Prison. They have amazing wood crafted stuff by inmates and at reasonable prices.

Thank you chasd60 and garym053 for your input and taking the time to help us in our search. Now we have to figure out how much time and when we can take vacation. The  school schedule has not yet been set as far as first day of school, and we have to make arrangements now to get kids into day camp programs for the summer for child care. Fun!
