I noticed that the group had a rally at Lake Cachuma in the past. How was it?

Would you be interested in going there again?

In the past SCCampers and NNC have had 2 rallies at Lake Cachuma in between Christmas and New years' Eve.  We weren't able to make either of them due to poorly timed illnesses. I think I remember reading that it rained both times.  Go figure...

IIRC, Lake Cachuma doesn't take reservations so if you wanted to have a rally there, you'd need to go in an off-peak time--hence the Christmas aspect of the past rallies.  Do a search for "Cchristmas" or "Ccachuma" (no quotes and note the double "C"s) and you should be able to find the info and pictures from the past rallies.  You can also look under "Past Trips" on the SCCampers site: //www.sccampers.org  Scott keeps info of past rallies there for everyone to access as well.

We went there once with the YMCA parent/child program. It's a nice campground but...It's hotter than you know what in the summer and it's a no contact lake..they do have a pool but they sell tickets but the # they sell for the day is limited so you need to be buy them at the earliest possible time they allow. for example if you arrive on Fri and you can but tickets for Sat. buy them on Fri.

Thanks for the info "glowstick lady" J/k.

I want to find a decent campground with a lake or river you can swim in, without driving 500 miles. Any ideas?

Depends on whether you want to dry camp or not.  Not too far from you is So. Carlsbad State Beach, which should be fairly easy to get into this time of year.  Further up the coast is McGrath State Beach -- again a dry camping spot, but really nice.  The water's cold, and I don't know if I'd do lots of swimming, but you could go wading.  If you want the parking lot experience, try the RV park in Buellton (sp?) - by Solvang.  If nothing else, there's good split pea soup & great Danish at the bakeries.  Used to be, the Shoreline Village RV park in Long Beach was nice.  Haven't been there in ~15 years, so you might want to do some asking around.  Oh!  There's a KOA toward Chula Vista that I stayed at around 10 years ago & it was nice.  How's that for a few within 500 miles?   :D

FYI, McGrath is temporarily closed. They closed it before the rainy season because it tends to flood a lot.

Kinda still cold for swimming in rivers and lakes.

Castaic Lake allows contact, Lytle Creek campground allows swimming, (it might be closed due to flooding).  You can swim within 50' of the shore at Big Bear Lake.  You can swim in Lake Gregory and camp in the Angeles National Forest.  The Colorado River, and Lake Powell are somewhat nearby, both have many nice campgrounds.

Any recommendations on the Colorado River? Preferrably something without naked people dancing from boat to boat. :yikes:
